STATEMENT OF WORK
NORTH DAKOTA USDA-NRCS
BISMARCK PLANT MATERIALS CENTER
IRRIGATION SYSTEM UPGRADES
1. SCOPE
The work shall consist of furnishing two linear move sprinkler systems including all required appurtenances and control systems for operation as noted within this statement of work. The supplier will deliver all equipment to the site (3308 University Drive Bismarck, ND 58504), assemble it, provide a working demonstration of all functions, and provide a 1 day training to NRCS staff covering operation and maintenance of the system.
2. PURPOSE
The existing traveling big gun irrigation system used at the Bismarck Plant Materials Center is extremely inefficient in terms of both water and energy usage, and causes damage to young seedlings and grasses during establishment. The alternative irrigation equipment available, portable handlines, is not practical to use given the limited staff currently employed at the PMC. Currently no equipment for monitoring soil moisture is available at the Center, which also does not allow for proper irrigation water management.
Installation of the linear move systems and soil moisture sensors will ensure efficient use of both water and power, as well as providing effective irrigation for establishment of plantings.
In addition to meeting the production needs of the PMC, the proposed equipment represents the current state of the art in irrigation water management technology and will be used for demonstration and technical training purposes by NRCS and our partners in North Dakota: Conservation Districts, NDSU Extension, State Water Commission ND Irrigation Association. The NRCS utilizes the Environmental Quality Incentives Program to promote water conservation, water quality, and energy conservation through installation of identical equipment on private agricultural lands in the state. The ability to hold workshops and demonstrations at the PMC will assist in effectively marketing EQIP Irrigation Water Management efforts in the state and training NRCS engineers, technicians, and planners.
3. LINEAR MOVE STRUCTURE REQUIREMENTS
The north linear move will be 670 feet and will be utilized to irrigate 970 lineal feet of beds currently (1580 ft long term), and the south linear move will be 620 feet and will be utilized to irrigate 1130 lineal feet of beds.
The design flow rate for the north system will be 115 gpm and design flow rate for the south system will be 131 gpm. Static pressures at field risers will range from 70 psi to 80 psi, and operating pressures will range from 30 psi to 40 psi. End guns will not be utilized on either system. Each system will be powered by an end mounted drive system, with diesel engine capable of generating a machine speed of at least 16.6 feet/hour.
The fuel tank on each machine will be 60 gallons, and be equipped with a lock and low fuel warning system.
The diesel engine will run an electric generator on each machine to power the control panel. All materials used in construction of the spans and supports will be new and free from defects, and made of aluminum or galvanized steel material. Span lengths on each system will ensure that no more than 4 towers will be required. Aluminum tubing shall have a minimum pressure rating of 150 psi and minimum wall thickness of .05 inches. The linear move mainline with be 6” diameter galvanized steel, minimum 14 gauge. The clear span height, from ground to the lower extent of truss rods, will be 15 feet. Each linear move will have a 4” Nelson Electric On-Off 800 Series Control Valve and an adjustable Pressure Regulator Valve. A 4 inch diameter SDR 13.5 HDPE drag hose will be provided for each system: the north system will require 500 feet and the south system will require 600 feet. The first 10 ft from the riser will be 4 inch diameter soft hose (reinforced rubber). Hardware on the hoses will allow for quick connect to the existing field risers onsite, which are 6” diameter female ring-band lock. Tires will be 14.9x24 4 ply tires with tubes on galvanized rims.
All joints and connections shall be made in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. All valves shall be equal to the size of pipe in which they are installed and of the material and type specified. All joints, connections, and valves shall be constructed to withstand the maximum design working pressure for the pipelines without damage or leakage.
4. CONTROL SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Each linear move will have a buried wire guidance control system installed. In addition, each liner move will have a programmable control panel and GPS tracking, to accommodate Variable Rate Irrigation system components. The control system will provide cell/PC based communications of alerts and real time operation information.
5. NOZZLE PACKAGE
Nozzles shall be equivalent to the Nelson Spinner S3000 with an S3030 body and a D8 plate (yellow).
Spacing of nozzles shall not exceed 7 ft. Drop tubes shall allow for nozzles to remain at a minimum height of 4 ft from the ground surface. Clips will be supplied on the drop tubes and mainspan to allow sprinkler to be moved up to a 13 ft clearance from ground surface. Drop tubes will be non-kink ¾” diameter rubber hose.
Nelson ¾” FNMP 3000 ST 15 psi pressure regulators shall be installed on each drop.
6. VARIABLE RATE IRRIGATION PACKAGE
Each linear move will be equipped with pneumatic actuated solenoid valves, panel, interface board, and GPS based programmable controller. The panel must be capable of operating multiple prescriptions, loaded and stored on the operating software. The valve controls must be capable of controlling each of the 4 zones, defined as the span between towers.
7. SOIL SENSORS
i. Two of the following: AquaSpy soil moisture probe (48 inch length). Includes a self-install kit, probe, communication tower, solar panel (power source), cellular data, subscription, and other items as necessary to fully install a functioning system such as cables, connectors, etc. Dealer will install the equipment.
ii. Two of the following: AquaCheck Classic soil moisture probe, minimum 48 inches in length. Includes a self-install kit, probe, communication tower, solar panel (power source), cellular data, subscription, and other items as necessary to fully install a functioning system such as cables, connectors, etc.
Dealer will install the equipment.
iii. Eight Watermark Soil Moisture Sensors (15’ wire length). Two Watermark monitors. One of the following: watermark meter, temperature sensor, rain gauge, bird cover (for rain gauge), date shuttle, slide hammer, watermark insertion tool.
iv. Two of the following: Irrometer model SR (replaceable tip) Tensiometers in the following lengths: 12”, 18”, 24” 36” 48”. Test Pump Service Unit (necessary for proper installation – 1 unit services all irrometers). Coring Tool Kit and extension Rod for Coring Tool Kit.
