General Notes

1. The contractor shall be responsible for contacting MISS UTILITY in advance of any work on the road to identify any existing utilities that may parallel the road.

2. All turnouts and curve widened areas are considered part of the roadway and shall be included with surface blading, ditching, and culvert cleaning work at no additional cost.

3. Rocks (larger than 2 inches), sediment, wood debris (larger than 1.5 inches and 18 inches long), leaves and other debris in the ditch line shall be removed and wasted over the fill slope or as directed by the Engineer.

4. Roadbed must be approved in writing by the Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) prior to placing any aggregate on the road.

5. During removal of protruding rocks from roadbed and ditch lines, all suitable material shall be conserved and kept within the traveled way.

6. Backslopes shall not be undercut. Drainage structures and road appurtenances shall not be damaged during this operation, and the contractor will be responsible for any damage that occurs from this operation. Handwork required to properly connect ditch flow lines to drainage structure inlets is incidental to Pay Item 303.18, Road Reconditioning, Roadbed. Any existing damaged culverts shall be brought to the COR’s attention for repair by the Forest Service.

7. When ditch bottoms are soft or if there is standing water present, avoid running the motor grader tire in the ditch. Reshape the ditch using the extended blade of a motor grader.

8. All suitable material excavated out of the ditch, and having the same character as the road surface, shall be reclaimed and used within the traveled way. Unsuitable material shall be wasted beyond and below the outer edge of the road shoulder or as directed by the COR.

9. Contractor shall test aggregate according to The Standard Specifications for the Construction of Roads and Bridges on Federal Highway Projects (FP-03), Section 154. Testing for gradation, moisture content, and maximum density shall be performed for every 1,000 tons of aggregate or other approved testing frequencies at the quarry and at the project location.

10. Compaction shall be performed with a motor grader and / roller to meet the requirements of FP-03, Subsections 301.04 and 301.05. Mix the aggregate and adjust the moisture content to obtain a uniform mixture with a moisture content within 2 percent of the optimum moisture content determined by AASHTO T 99 or other approved testing procedures. Compact aggregate to at least 95 percent of maximum density determined by AASHTO T 99 or other approved testing procedures. Determine the in-place density and moisture content according to AASHTO T 310 or other approved testing procedures.
