Add the following compaction methods:

(d) Layer Placement Method (Hauling and Spreading Equipment). Place material by end dumping to the minimum depth needed for operation of spreading equipment. Level and smooth each embankment layer before placing the next layers. Operate hauling and spreading equipment uniformly over the full width of each layer. Construct a solid embankment with adequate compaction by working smaller rock and fines in with the larger rocks to fill the voids, and by operating hauling and spreading equipment uniformly over the full width of each layer as the embankment is constructed.

(e) Layer Placement (Roller Compaction) Method. Place material by end dumping to the minimum depth needed for operation of spreading equipment. Adjust the moisture content of the material to obtain a mass that will not visibly deflect under the load of the hauling and spreading equipment. Operate compaction equipment over the full width of each layer until visible deformation of the layer ceases or, in when a sheepsfoot roller is used, the roller “walks out” of the layer. Make at least three complete passes.

620A.01 Description

This work consists of constructing, reconstructing, or rehabilitating trail overlook stone pads and associated walls.

620A.02 Conform to the following Section and subsections:

Masonry and Mortar Cement 701.02

Rock for Masonry Structures 705.03

Geotextile and Geocomposite Drain Material 714.01

620A.03 General – (a.) Overlook walls

Existing rock walls shall be repaired by resetting displaced large rock and chinking existing rock to stabilize and fill voids. Chinking rock shall be set to a depth so not to protrude beyond the face of existing wall rock. Voids need not be filled completely, but finished work shall provide adequate stabilization of wall rock and chinking/spaces shall be consistent throughout. Provide sample section for approval by the COR prior to moving forward with completion.

Rock for chinking shall be similar in type and color of existing chinking and surrounding wall rock. All chinking shall be a crushed or broken type stone having sharp edges and angular faces.

620A.03 General – (b.) Overlook pads

Furnish stone that matches or is similar to existing stone on and around the site. Submit stone samples to the CO for review and selection 14 days prior to starting any work. Samples shall represent the color range, shape and size of stone. “Green Mountain Granite” or others as produced by Swenson Granite Works, Concord, NH may be possible and acceptable for stone type and color.

Keep an adequate inventory of the stone on the site to provide an ample variety of stones for use.

If additional stone is required, closely match existing in use stone and mix with existing stone to provide uniform color and pattern throughout.

Finished surface of the stone pad shall be 4” minimum below the top of the surrounding rock wall, as indicated on the drawings and be relatively smooth with all depressions, projections, and slope meeting accessibility requirements.

Excavate and backfill according to Section 209. Fully compact the subgrade and base prior to placing bedding material. Compact and shape the stone bedding so finished surface will drain and meet accessibility requirements. Clean the bearing surface thoroughly prior to setting the stones.

620A.04 Preparation of Overlook Subrade, Base, and Bedding

Prepare the overlook pads for stone surface placement by completing the following:

Excavate the subgrade to depth necessary to allow placement of required depth of base and bedding materials, level and compact. Backfill material required, if any, to bring the subgrade up to required grades shall be approved by the COR. Suitable on site materials, if available and approved may be used.

Place base layer of ¾ inch to 1 inch washed stone, 6-inch compacted thickness, level and compact.

Install Type II-C geotextile fabric separation layer between stone base and crushed gravel bedding.

Place stone bedding layer of ¾” sandy crushed bank run gravel, 6-inch compacted thickness, shape to drain and compact.

620A.05 Placing Overlook Stone Surface

Stone shall be placed in a random pattern of size and color, with consistent joint width spacing.

Joint size shall be 1 minimum width, unless requested and approved otherwise by the COR.

Joints may be at angles with the vertical not to exceed 30 degrees. Clean all stones thoroughly prior to placing. Remove and reset or replace any stone not meeting accessibility requirements immediately.

Chock the joints flush with a dry mixture of 4 parts sand and 1 part cement by mass and carefully water the surface with clean water to saturate the joint filler. Wet stones and open joints to be filled prior to placing joint filler.

Repoint any joint not meeting the specifications and/or accessibility requirements.

Protect the masonry from hot &/or dry weather and keep it wet for at least 72 hours.

Do not fill joints when the ambient temperature is below 40 °F and maintain the completed masonry at a temperature above 40 °F for a minimum of 24 hours after completion.

620A.06 Finishing Overlook Stone Surface

Clean all stone surfaces with an approved cleaning product and per manufacturers’ recommendations to remove all cement residues. Final wash and brush the entire surface to remove remaining cement, cleaning product residues, soil and debris.
