Description of work: (Concrete Box Culvert)

Supply a weight bearing pre-cast concrete box culvert adhering to all AASHTO M-273 specifications, Federal Highways “Standard Specifications for Construction of Roads and Bridges, FP-03”, and the U.S. Forest Service Supplemental Specifications (FSSS) “attached”. The maximum pick of any section of culvert shall be 19,000 lbs. The culvert shall meet the design requirements of AASHTO M-273, Table 1 for a box culvert with interior dimensions of 12’ span x 6’ rise. The Supplier shall submit complete shop drawings (including rebar placement) for approval within 30 days of Contract award. There shall be no deviations from the AASHTO M-273 specification unless otherwise stated in this Contract.

The concrete shall have a minimum compressive strength of 5000 psi and be evaluated under Section 10, Physical Requirements, in M-273. Compressive strength testing results shall be supplied at the same time as delivery.

The mix design and pouring of the concrete shall be evaluated under FP-03 & FSSS Section 552, Structural Concrete. The mix design shall be submitted for approval no less than 30 days before pouring is scheduled to begin.

M-273 Section 11, Permissible Variations, details the allowable deviations from the specifications.

M-273 Section 14, Rejection, states the box culvert may be rejected for failure to conform to any of the AASHTO specifications. Section 14 also outlines deficiencies for which individual sections of the culvert may be rejected.

M-273 Section 15, Product Marking, specifies the requirements for identification of each individual piece of the concrete structure. Failure to mark any piece of the structure shall be grounds for immediate rejection of that section.

Product Quality – A quality product shall be supplied that meets industry standards and specifications. The product should be free of major spalls and cracks. Minor spalls may be repaired as allowed by the Government. The C.O. retains the right to reject the product if by visual inspection it is determined that construction of the culvert was not accomplished according to specifications or industry standards. Such observations shall include but is not limited to: frequent spalling, numerous cracks that run full width and depth, damage to joints, widespread pitting, & crumbling corners.

Notification and Inspection – The supplier shall notify the C.O. 1 week prior to forming and pouring the structure so the Government has the opportunity to visually inspect construction on site. The Government retains the right to inspect construction of the structure in stages i.e., Forming, Rebar Placement, & Concrete Placement. If the manufacturer proceeds to construct the sections without the C.O.’s representative on site, the supplier will be in violation of the terms of this contract, and the culvert sections in question may be rejected.

Construct 2, 12’ standard concrete Jersey Barriers that conform to ASTM C 825 and FP-03 Section 618.

The Jersey Barriers shall be free of spalls and defects. The Government shall have the right to inspect construction of the barriers as detailed above for the Box Culvert.

Construct Terminal Sections as described in FP-03 Section 618.

The barriers and terminal sections shall be constructed in a manner so they can be mounted together. The supplier shall furnish all hardware necessary to anchor the terminal sections to the barriers.

The supplier shall submit complete shop drawings (including rebar layout) for approval of the Jersey Barriers & Terminal Sections within 30 days of Contract award.
