C-5.2 Directionally Fall Trees or Snags with Chainsaw (Item 2):
Trees or snags shall be felled in order to reduce overhead hazards, to thin riparian areas and to obtain large wood for stream structures. Trees/snags to be fallen will be determined on each task order and will be visibly marked on the ground. All hazard trees shall be fallen first to safeguard the area. Trees/Snags shall be fallen in a manner to achieve maximum length, lengths less than 30 feet may not be accepted. Trees could be as large as 60" DBH. If the Contractor identifies an unmarked tree to be a hazard to project activities, then a Government representative will make the decision for removal.
Sawyers shall cut trees or snags designated by the government and shall fall trees in a manner that minimizes damage to adjacent trees. More care is required in riparian areas than upland areas. No hazardous hang ups shall be left in place.
Limbing logs/trees is to be avoided, but may be necessary to yard into an in-stream structure.
Attached limbs are beneficial to interlocking in-stream structures. Trees to be limbed and bucked in some cases shall be fallen as a result of windstorms and/or entangled with other trees and limbs.
C-5.3 Directionally Pull Trees with Roots Attached (Item 3):
Trees shall be pulled over in a manner that will achieve maximum length with the root system attached. Trees to be pulled over will be designated by task order and visibly marked by the Government. Tree sizes range in size from 18 inches to 76 inches DBH. Lengths less than 30 feet may not be accepted, if the tree to be pulled over was originally over 30 feet. It’s preferred to have trees pulled over, without breaking off any upper portions. Parts of the root system may need to be sawed off and/or the soil saturated with a pump system to facilitate tree pulling.
More environmental protection is required in riparian areas than in upland areas. Trees shall be toppled in a manner that minimizes damage to adjacent trees. No hazardous hang ups shall be left in place. Trees used as tailholds shall not be damaged in any manner. Equipment may not enter stream channels in order to pull over streamside trees.
C-5.4 Cable Yard Oversized or Tipped Tree with Roots Attached to an In-stream Structure (55 feet long, or greater with a root wad greater than 3 feet in diameter) (Item 4):
Oversized wood pieces shall be cable yarded to an in-stream structure. Wood pieces for this item will generally have lengths from 30 to 100 feet long and have root wads from 3 to 15 feet in diameter. Yarding distances range from 1 to 100 yards. The designation of trees or logs to be yarded and their final positions will be determined on each Task Order.
