652 – Meadow Restoration
Description
652.01 This work consists of cutting small trees and brush by use of hand tools such as chainsaws to restore habitat meadows. Use of equipment is strictly prohibited. Cut material shall be hand piled and covered for future burning.
Materials
652.02 Furnish 4-mil, black, polyethylene plastic (no substitutes) to cover burn piles.
Construction
652.03 General. In area marked and flagged by Contracting Officer all trees 6” DBH or smaller shall be cut and hand piled. All previous cut branches and down debris less than 6” diameter within the flagged boundary shall also be gathered and incorporated into the hand piles.
652.04 Burn Piles. Burn piles shall be constructed compactly by aligning individual pieces in the same direction and placing the heavier slash on top. Piles shall have a stable base to prevent toppling. The long axis of the individual pieces shall be oriented up and down slope. Protruding pieces shall be trimmed to allow covering in a manner that permits the piles to shed water. Each pile shall have a minimum of 10-15% by volume of small sized slash (small branches less than ½ inch in diameter and, or small branches with needles or leaves attached) placed in the lower, center of the pile to provide ‘kindling’ for prompt ignition and to aid in the combustion of larger slash. Material projecting more than 2 feet from the general pile perimeter shall be cut off and re-piled. Piles shall be no smaller than 6 feet in diameter and 5 feet tall or greater than 7 feet in diameter and 6 feet tall.
Polyethylene plastic shall be placed on all piles so that a minimum of 70% of the horizontal and vertical surface area is covered. Minimum size of the polyethylene plastic sheet shall be six foot square. Plastic shall be secured on the pile by placing 20% of the total material piled on top of the plastic as to provide protection from rain, snow and sunlight.
Unless specifically approved by the Contracting Officer, piles shall be located so that later burning will not damage standing green trees. Piles shall be at least 15 feet apart. Piles shall not be placed on or adjacent to tree stumps, snags, or within eight feet of down logs. Piles shall not be placed under overhanging limbs. Piles shall not be located on road surfaces, in ditches and channel bottoms. Slash maybe required to be carried more than 30 feet to ensure protection of standing green trees. This may result in locating piles beyond the area in which slash was previously located.
Wagner Gap Meadow Restoration – Supplemental Specifications Page 19 of 20
652.05 Acceptance. Construction of burn piles will be evaluated under Subsections 106.02.
Measurement
652.06 Measure the items listed in the bid schedule according to Subsection 109.02.
Payment
652.07 The accepted quantities, measured as provided in Subsection 109.02 and above, will be paid at the contract price per unit of measurement for the Section 652 pay item listed in the bid schedule. Payment will be full compensation for the work prescribed in this Section. See Subsection 109.05.
