211 - ROADWAY OBLITERATION
211.00_01_us_10_11_2006
211.01 Description
Delete this subsection and replace with the following:
This work consists of the reclamation of roadways by the removal of culverts;
construction of waterbars and leadoff ditches; restoration of stream channels; and seeding, fertilizing, and mulching of all disturbed areas. This work may include necessary diverting of live streams, pumping, bailing, draining, sheeting, bracing, and miscellaneous items required for execution of the work. Additionally, survey stakes depicting work locations may need to be re-established using original survey notes and/or plans.
Roadway obliteration is designated as follows:
Method 2:
- Leave a 3-5 foot passage way along the route to enhance foot traffic or animal use. This passage way will be free of debris, slash or obstructions so wildlife or other traffic is not impeded.
- Relieve soil compaction by scarifying/ripping the entire road surface with the excavator bucket to a depth of 12-24 inches. Salvage and stockpile all topsoil and vegetation so that it can be used for transplanting after re-contour is complete.
- Re-contour road prisms (re-establishing natural drainage across the landscape) to as close as possible, the original topography and contours of the hillside.
Remove road fill, placing it on the cut bench and shaping it to fit the contour up to the top of the cut slope. Also, remove side-cast piles of embankment in the vicinity of the fill slope that were created when the road was originally constructed. Surface of re-contoured material should be uneven to break up flow but not trap water in low areas. When drainages and riparian areas are encountered, overlying fill material will be pulled back to a more natural channel configuration to re-establish the streams bank full width.
- Where available, transplant live vegetative material from the road surface and adjacent areas into the treated road prism. Transplanted material shall be conserved with root mass and surrounding soil whenever possible. Mix sod and vegetation into the new soil surface or transfer islands or plugs of native vegetation to encourage establishment of grasses and forbs.
- Vegetative material shall include native shrubs and sod. It is recommended the excavator operator utilize the bucket and thumb to plant vegetative material.
- Apply duff and coarse woody debris (slash and/or trees) of various size classes sparingly over the treated road prism in such as manner as to provide cover and protection of the newly disturbed soil and to incorporate organic material at the site. Coarse woody from fill slopes can be used in or on the recontoured slope.
If placed on the surface woody debris should be placed perpendicular to the ground side-slope to help prevent soil erosion. This slash needs to be compacted with the bucket so that it is in contact with the soil surface.
Method 3:
- Relieve soil compaction by scarifying/ripping the entire area designated to a depth of 12-24 inches. Salvage and/or stockpile all topsoil and vegetation so that it can be used for transplanting after scarification is complete.
- Recontour the travel way through the area and transplant vegetation from the sides.
- Use adjacent material to recontour the ford approach out of the designated scarification area so that it resembles the natural streambank upstream and downstream.
- Transport rip rap from the north side of the scarification area. Rip rap can be used to deter crossing at the rehabbed ford and to supplement rip rap at the other ford crossings.
251 – RIPRAP
251.01 Description.
Replace with the following:
This work consists of hauling, and placing riprap for bank protection, and erosion control.
