C. Earthwork - Section 02220

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1

MATERIAL

Composition of Mix (Job-Mix Formula). Provide a hot asphalt concrete mix composed of crushed stone or gravel and asphalt binder mixed in an approved plant. Use an aggregate gradation and asphalt binder of a quality conforming to those normally used locally by either Federal or State agencies for the type of work being constructed.

PART 3 - CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

3.1 Surface Preparation. Prepare the surface according to Section 2519.

3.2 Weather Limitations. Place asphalt concrete on a dry, unfrozen surface when the air temperature in the shade is at least 35 ºF and rising.

3.3 Placing. Place the mix with a mechanical paver. For roadway paving, do not place lifts thicker than 4 inches. In areas where mechanical spreading and finishing is impractical, spread and finish each course by hand raking, screeding, or by other approved methods. Construct a surface that is uniform in texture and cross-section.

3.4 Compacting.

(a) Roadway paving. Compact the mix to a minimum of 90 percent of maximum specific gravity (density). Complete compaction before the mix temperature falls below 160 ºF.

02700 – 1

(b) Non-roadway paving. Compact by rolling with a hand-operated roller weighing at least 300 pounds or with a small power roller.

Compact areas that are not accessible to rollers by other approved methods.

3.5 Pavement Smoothness. Use a 10-foot metal straightedge to measure at right angles and parallel to the centerline. Defective areas are surface deviations in excess of 1/4 inch in 10 feet between any two contacts of the straightedge with the surface. Correct defective areas using approved methods.

3.6 Sand Seal: An application of asphaltic material covered with fine aggregate used to improve the skid resistance of slippery pavements. All pavements will receive a sand seal prior to compaction.

3.7 Clean Up:

A. Remove loose pavement and aggregate from site.

B. Remove all spillage and over-spray of liquid asphalt from pavement, sidewalks, buildings and other listed features.

3.8 Protection of Completed Work: Keep vehicular traffic off newly paved areas until pavement surface temperature has cooled below 100 degrees Farenheit. Do not permit stationary loads on pavement until 24 hours after placement.
