Section C - Description/Specifications/Statement of Work
GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS
AUSTIN RANGER DISTRICT RESIDENTIAL ROOF REPLACEMENT
Final Submittal
1.1 SCOPE OF CONTRACT
A. This project includes replacement of existing asphalt shingle roof with sheet metal roof on multiple government owned residential houses at the Austin Ranger District Residential Compound. All measurements are approximate and need to be field verified by contractor. Properly dispose of demolished material off government property.
B. The base bid work includes removal and disposal of existing asphalt shingle roof down to wood roof sheathing; typical roof slope 3:12; installation of new underlayment, flashing and sheet metal roof on the following buildings:
1. Single wide Trailer #217 and attached porch
2. Laundry Building
C. Optional work that may be awarded includes all work described above associated with:
1. Option 1: Duplex #212/214
2. Option 2: House #210
3. Option 3: House #213
4. Option 4: Bunkhouse #220/222
5. Option 5: Duplex #216/218
1.2 PROJECT LOCATION
A. The project is located in the Austin Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Lander County, Nevada, in Section 18, T19N, R44E at the district compound.
The address for the Austin Ranger District Compound is located on Midas Loop, west of town off of Midas Canyon Road.
1.3 SITE INFORMATION AND LIMITATIONS
A. The following site conditions are considered incidental to the contract and the contractor will not be paid directly for any of the following items:
1. Construction sites will remain open to the public during construction. The Contractor will be responsible for signing and limiting public access.
2. All construction equipment shall be pressure washed before entering National Forest System lands. The removal of mud and debris from treads, tracks and undercarriage, with emphasis on axles, frame, cross-members, motor mounts, and underneath steps, running boards, and front bumper/brush guard assemblies will be required. The purpose is to reduce or eliminate the transportation of noxious weeds, which is required by Federal and State regulations.
3. Limited water and power are available at the site for construction purposes.

4. Toilet facilities are un-available at the site but available at the District Office 0.30 miles south of the Compound.
1.4 WORK CAMPS, STAGING AND STORAGE AREAS
A. Areas for staging operations and storage of materials shall be approved by the COR.
The Contractor must request in writing for approval from the CO to stage trailers (work) on site.
B. No overnight camping will be allowed on site.
1.5 INSPECTION OF WORKSITE
A. The contractor acknowledges they have taken the necessary steps to ascertain the nature and location of work, and have investigated and satisfied themselves as to the general and local conditions that can affect the work or its cost. Any failure of the contractor to take the actions described and acknowledged in this paragraph will not relieve the Contractor from the responsibility of estimating properly the difficulty and cost of successfully performing the work, or for proceeding to successfully perform the work without additional expenses to the government.

SECTION 011250 - MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. Measurement and payment for contract work will be made only for and under those pay items included in the Schedule of Items. All other work, labor, materials, equipment, and incidentals necessary to successfully complete the project will be considered as included in the payment for items shown. This section defines the method of measurements and basis of payment for work items listed in the Schedule of Items.
1.2 DETERMINATION OF QUANTITIES
A. The following measurements and calculations shall be used to determine contract quantities for payment.
1. For individual construction items, longitudinal and lateral measurements for area computations shall be made horizontally or corrected to horizontal measurement unless otherwise specified.
1.3 UNITS OF MEASUREMENT
A. Payment shall be by units defined and determined according to U.S. Standard measure and by the following:
1. Each (EA): One complete unit, which may consist of one or more parts.
2. Gallons (GAL): The quantity shall be measured by any of the following methods:
a. Measured volume in container.
b. Metered volume by approved metering system.
c. Commercially package volume.
3. Hour (HR): Measurement will be for the actual number of hours (or fraction thereof) ordered by the Contracting Officer and performed by the contractor.
4. Linear Foot (LF): Measurement of work along its length from point-to-point;
parallel to the base or foundation. Do not measure overlaps.
5. Lump Sum (LS): One complete unit.
6. Square Foot (SF): Measured on a plane parallel to the surface being measured.
7. Square Yard (SY): Measured on a plane parallel to the surface being measured.
1.4 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT
A. One of the following methods of measurement for determining final payment is designated on the Schedule of Items for each pay item:

1. ACTUAL QUANTITIES (AQ) - These quantities are determined from actual measurements of completed work.
2. DESIGNED QUANTITIES (DQ) - These quantities denote the final number or units to be paid for under the terms of the contract. They are based upon the original design data available prior to advertising the project. Original design data include the preliminary survey information, design assumptions, calculations, drawings, and the presentation in the contract. Changes in the number of units shown in the Schedule of Items may be authorized under any of the following conditions:
a. As a result of changes in the work authorized by the CO.
b. As a result of the CO determining that errors exist in the original design that causes a pay item quantity to change by 15 percent or more.
c. As a result of the Contractor submitting to the CO a written request showing evidence of errors in the original design that cause a pay item quantity to change by 15 percent or more. The evidence must be verifiable and consist of calculations, drawings, or other data that show how the designed quantity is believed to be in error.
3. LUMP SUM QUANTITIES (LSQ) - These quantities denote one complete unit of work as required by or described in the contract, including necessary materials, equipment, and labor to complete the job. They shall not be measured.

SECTION 011900 - MOBILIZATION
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. This item is intended to compensate the Contractor for operations including, but not limited to, those necessary for the movement of personnel, equipment, supplies, and incidentals to the project site; for payment of premiums for bonds and insurance for the project; and for any other work and operations which must be performed or costs that must be incurred incident to the initiation of meaningful work at the site and for which payment is not otherwise provided for under the contract.
1.2 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT
A. The measurement shall be lump sum for mobilization. Payment shall be as follows:
1. Bond premiums will be reimbursed after receipt of the evidence of payment.
2. 50% of the lump sum, not to exceed 5% of the original contract amount, will be paid following completion of 5% of the original contract amount not including mobilization and bond premiums.
3. Payment of the remaining portion of the lump sum, up to 10% of the original contract amount, will be paid following completion of 10% of the original contract amount not including mobilization and bond premiums.
4. Any portion of the lump sum in excess of 10% of the original contract amount will be paid after final acceptance.

SECTION 013300 - SUBMITTAL PROCEDURES
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes administrative and procedural requirements for submitting Shop Drawings, Product Data, Samples, and other miscellaneous submittals. See Table 013300-1 for a summary of required submittals.
B. See other specification section within this package for additional requirements on submittal.
1.2 SUBMITTAL PROCEDURES
A. Coordination: Coordinate preparation and processing of submittals with performance of construction activities.
1. Coordinate transmittal of different types of submittals for related parts of the Work so processing will not be delayed because of need to review submittals concurrently for coordination.
a. The Contracting Officer (CO) reserves the right to withhold action on a submittal requiring coordination with other submittals until related submittals are received.
B. Processing Time: Allow enough time for submittal review, including time for re-submittals, as follows. Time for review shall commence on CO's receipt of submittal.
1. Initial Review: Allow 14 days for initial review of each submittal. Allow additional time if processing must be delayed to permit coordination with subsequent submittals. CO will advise Contractor when a submittal being processed must be delayed for coordination.
2. If intermediate submittal is necessary, process it in same manner as initial submittal.
3. Allow 14 days for processing each re-submittal.
4. No extension of the Contract Time will be authorized because of failure to transmit submittals enough in advance of the Work to permit processing.
C. Identification: Place a permanent label or title block on each submittal for identification.
1. Indicate name of firm or entity that prepared each submittal on label or title block.
2. Provide a space on label or beside title block to record Contractor's review and approval markings and action taken by CO.
3. Include the following information on label for processing and recording action taken:

a. Project name.
b. Date.
c. Name and address of Contractor.
d. Name of manufacturer.
e. Unique identifier, including revision number.
f. Number and title of appropriate Specification Section.

h. If more than one item is shown on submittal sheet, identify item.
D. Deviations: Highlight, encircle, or otherwise identify deviations from the Contract Documents on submittals.
E. Additional Copies: Unless additional copies are required for final submittal, and unless CO observes noncompliance with provisions of the Contract Documents, initial submittal may serve as final submittal.
F. Use for Construction: Use only final submittals with mark indicating action taken by CO in connection with construction.
1.3 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT
A. No separate measurement and/or payment will be made for this section. Payment shall be included with work shown in the schedule of items.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 SUBMITTALS
A. General: Prepare and submit Action Submittals required by individual Specification Sections.
B. Product Data: Collect information into a single submittal for each element of construction and type of product or equipment.
1. Mark each copy of each submittal to show which products and options are applicable.
2. Include the following information, as applicable:
a. Manufacturer's written recommendations.
b. Manufacturer's product specifications.
c. Manufacturer's installation instructions.
d. Manufacturer's catalog cuts.
e. Wiring diagrams showing factory-installed wiring.
f. Compliance with recognized trade association standards.
g. Compliance with recognized testing agency standards.
C. Contractor's Construction Schedule: The contractor shall submit a Construction Schedule, for approval by CO, in accordance with the contract provisions within 5 day of commencement of work.

D. Maintenance Data: Prepare written and graphic instructions and procedures for operation and normal maintenance of products and equipment.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 GENERAL
A. Review each submittal and check for compliance with the Contract Documents. Note corrections and field dimensions. Mark with approval stamp before submitting to CO.
B. Substitutions – Whenever materials, products, and equipment are listed by name or brand in the specifications and/or on the drawings, it is used as a measure of quality, utility, or standard. If the Contractor prefers to use any other brand or manufacturer of same quality, appearance and utility to that specified, he shall request substitution.
3.2 SUBMITTAL SCHEDULE – Submittals shall be made as required by and called for in the drawings and specifications. The following table is a summary of the required submittals for the project - the table is to assist the Contractor and may not be all inclusive – additional submittals may be required by specific specifications:

SECTION 014100 - QUALITY CONTROL
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 This work shall consist of providing quality control in conformance with the inspection, testing, and product certification requirements of this contract to ensure compliance with the drawings and specifications. The Contractor shall provide all personnel, equipment, tests, and reports necessary to meet the requirements of the contract.
1.2 QUALITY CONTROL
A. The Contractor shall provide and maintain a quality control system that will ensure all services, supplies, and construction work required under this contract conforms to the contract requirements. The Contractor shall perform, or cause to be performed, the sampling, inspection, and testing required to substantiate that all services, supplies, and construction conform to the contract requirements.

3.1 QUALITY CONTROL SYSTEM
A. General: Perform required testing, inspections, sampling, and similar services per direction specified in the contract drawings and specifications and in accordance with established industry standards.
3.2 CONTRACTOR QUALITY CONTROL PLAN
A. At the time of the preconstruction conference, the Contractor shall submit for approval a written Contractor Quality Control Plan.

1. If the plan requires any revisions or corrections, the Contractor shall resubmit the plan within 10 days.
2. The Government reserves the right to require changes in the plan during the contract period as necessary.
3. No change in the approved plan may be made without written concurrence by the Contracting Officer.
4. At a minimum, the plan shall include the following:
a. A list of personnel responsible for quality control and assigned duties.
Include each person's qualifications.
b. A copy of a letter of direction to the Contractor's Quality Control Supervisor outlining assigned duties.
c. Names, qualifications, and descriptions of laboratories to perform sampling and testing, and samples of proposed report forms.
d. Methods of performing, documenting, and enforcing quality control of all work.
e. Methods of monitoring and controlling environmental pollution and contamination as required by all applicable regulations and laws.
3.3 PERMITS, LICENSES, AND CERTIFICATES
A. For Contracting Officer’s records, submit copies of permits, licenses, certifications, inspection reports, releases, jurisdictional settlements, notices, receipts for fee payments, judgments, correspondence, records, and similar documents, established for compliance with standards and regulations relevant to the on performance of the work.

SECTION 076100 - SHEET METAL ROOFING
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes the following custom-fabricated sheet metal roofing:
1. Standing-seam metal roofing.
B. Related Sections include the following:
1. Section 07620 "Sheet Metal Flashing and Trim" for fascia flashings and other sheet metal work not part of sheet metal roofing.
2. Section 07920 "Joint Sealants" for field-applied sheet metal roofing sealants.
1.2 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. General: Provide complete sheet metal roofing system, including, but not limited to, cleats, clips, anchors and fasteners, sheet metal flashing and drainage components related to sheet metal roofing, fascia panels, trim, underlayment, and accessories as indicated and as required for a weathertight installation.
B. Wind-Uplift Resistance: Provide portable roll-forming equipment capable of producing sheet metal roofing assemblies that comply with UL 580 for Class 90 wind-uplift resistance.
1. Maintain UL certification of portable roll-forming equipment for duration of sheet metal roofing work.
C. Thermal Movements: Provide sheet metal roofing that allows for thermal movements resulting from changes in ambient and surface temperatures by preventing buckling, opening of joints, hole elongation, overstressing of components, failure of joint sealants, failure of connections, and other detrimental effects. Provide clips that resist rotation and avoid shear stress as a result of sheet metal roofing thermal movements. Base engineering calculation on surface temperatures of materials due to both solar heat gain and nighttime-sky heat loss.
1. Temperature Change (Range): 120 deg F, ambient; 180 deg F, material surfaces.
D. Water Infiltration: Provide sheet metal roofing that does not allow water infiltration to building interior, with metal flashing and connections of sheet metal roofing lapped to allow moisture to run over and off the material.

A. Product Data: For each product indicated. Include details of construction relative to materials, dimensions of individual components and profiles, and finishes.
B. Qualification Data: For Installer.
1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Installer Qualifications: Fabricator of sheet metal roofing.
B. Custom-Fabricated Sheet Metal Roofing Fabricator Qualifications: Shop that employs skilled workers who custom-fabricate sheet metal roofing similar to that required for this Project and whose products have a record of successful in-service performance.
C. Sheet Metal Roofing Standard: Comply with SMACNA's "Architectural Sheet Metal Manual." Conform to dimensions and profiles shown unless more stringent requirements are indicated.
1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Deliver components, and other sheet metal roofing materials so as not to be damaged or deformed. Package sheet metal roofing materials for protection during transportation and handling.
B. Unload, store, and erect sheet metal roofing materials in a manner to prevent bending, warping, twisting, and surface damage.
C. Stack materials on platforms or pallets, covered with suitable weathertight and ventilated covering. Store sheet metal roofing materials to ensure dryness. Do not store sheet metal roofing materials in contact with other materials that might cause staining, denting, or other surface damage.
D. Protect strippable protective covering on sheet metal roofing from exposure to sunlight and high humidity, except to extent necessary for period of sheet metal roofing installation.
1.6 COORDINATION
A. Coordinate sheet metal roofing with rain drainage work, flashing, trim, and construction of parapets, walls, and other adjoining work to provide a leakproof, secure, and non-corrosive installation.
1.7 WARRANTY
A. Special Warranty on Finishes: Manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair finish or replace sheet metal roofing that shows evidence of deterioration of factory-applied finishes within specified warranty period.
1. Fluoropolymer Finish: Deterioration includes, but is not limited to, the following:
a. Color fading more than 5 Hunter units when tested according to
ASTM D 2244.

b. Chalking in excess of a No. 8 rating when tested according to
ASTM D 4214.
c. Cracking, checking, peeling, or failure of paint to adhere to bare metal.
2. Finish Warranty Period: 20 years from date of Substantial Completion.
B. Special Installer's Warranty: Roofing Installer's warranty, on warranty form at end of this Section, signed by Roofing Installer, in which Roofing Installer agrees to repair or replace components of custom-fabricated sheet metal roofing that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.
1. Failures include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. Structural failures.
b. Loose parts.
c. Wrinkling or buckling.
d. Failure to remain weathertight, including uncontrolled water leakage.
e. Deterioration of metals, metal finishes, and other materials beyond normal weathering, including nonuniformity of color or finish.
f. Galvanic action between sheet metal roofing and dissimilar materials.
2. Warranty Period: Two years from date of Substantial Completion.
1.8 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT
A. There will be no separate measurement or payment for work in this section. Payment will be included at the contract unit price as shown on the Schedule of Items for the building.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A. In other Part 2 articles where titles below introduce lists, the following requirements apply for product selection:
1. Available Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the products specified.
2.2 ROOFING SHEET METALS
A. Metallic-Coated Steel Sheet Pre-painted with Coil Coating: Steel sheet metallic coated by the hot-dip process and pre-painted by the coil-coating process to comply with
ASTM A 755/A 755M.
1. Zinc-Coated (Galvanized) Steel Sheet: ASTM A 653/A 653M, G90 (Z275) coating designation; structural quality.
2. Surface: Smooth, flat finish.
3. Thickness: 0.028 inch, unless otherwise indicated.

4. Exposed Finishes: Apply the following coil coating, as specified or indicated on Drawings:
a. High-Performance Organic Finish: Prepare, pre-treat, and apply coating to exposed metal surfaces to comply with coating and resin manufacturers' written instructions.
1) Fluoropolymer Two-Coat System: Manufacturer's standard two-coat, thermocured system consisting of specially formulated inhibitive primer and fluoropolymer color topcoat containing not less than 70 percent polyvinylidene fluoride resin by weight; complying with physical properties and coating performance requirements of AAMA 2605, except as modified below:
a) Humidity Resistance: 2000 hours.
b) Salt-Spray Resistance: 2000 hours.
2) Fluoropolymer Three-Coat System: Manufacturer's standard three-coat, thermocured system consisting of specially formulated inhibitive primer, fluoropolymer color coat, and clear fluoropolymer topcoat, with both color coat and clear topcoat containing not less than 70 percent polyvinylidene fluoride resin by weight, with a minimum total dry film thickness of 1.5 mil; complying with physical properties and coating performance requirements of AAMA 2605, except as modified below:
a) Humidity Resistance: 2000 hours.
b) Salt-Spray Resistance: 2000 hours.
3) Color: As indicated by COR.
2.3 UNDERLAYMENT MATERIALS
A. Felts: ASTM D 226, Type II (No. 30), asphalt-saturated organic felts.
B. Self-Adhering, High-Temperature Sheet: 30 to 40 mils thick minimum, consisting of slip-resisting polyethylene-film top surface laminated to layer of butyl or SBS-modified asphalt adhesive, with release-paper backing; cold applied. Provide primer when recommended by underlayment manufacturer.
1. Thermal Stability: Stable after testing at 240 deg F; ASTM D 1970.
2. Low Temperature Flexibility: Passes after testing at minus 20 deg F;
ASTM D 1970.
3. Available Products:

2.4 MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS
A. General: Provide materials and types of fasteners, solder, welding rods, protective coatings, separators, sealants, and other miscellaneous items as required for a complete roofing system and as recommended by fabricator for sheet metal roofing.
B. Fasteners: Self-tapping screws, self-locking rivets and bolts, and other suitable fasteners designed to withstand design loads.
1. Exposed Fasteners: Heads matching color of sheet metal roofing by means of plastic caps or factory-applied coating.
2. Fasteners for Flashing and Trim: Blind fasteners or self-drilling screws with hex washer head.
3. Blind Fasteners: High-strength aluminum or stainless-steel rivets.
C. Sealing Tape: Pressure-sensitive, 100 percent solids, polyisobutylene compound sealing tape with release-paper backing. Provide permanently elastic, non-sag, nontoxic, non-staining tape.
D. Bituminous Coating: Cold-applied asphalt mastic, SSPC-Paint 12, compounded for 15-mil dry film thickness per coat. Provide inert-type noncorrosive compound free of asbestos fibers, sulfur components, and other deleterious impurities.
2.5 ACCESSORIES
A. Sheet Metal Roofing Accessories: Provide components required for a complete sheet metal roofing assembly including trim, copings, fasciae, corner units, ridge closures, clips, flashings, sealants, gaskets, fillers, closure strips, and similar items. Match material and finish of sheet metal roofing, unless otherwise indicated.
1. Closures: Provide closures at eaves and ridges, fabricated of same metal as sheet metal roofing.
2. Cleats: Mechanically seamed cleats formed from the following material:
a. Metallic-Coated Steel Roofing: 0.0250-inch thick, stainless-steel or nylon-coated aluminum sheet.
3. Backing Plates: Provide metal backing plates at panel end splices, fabricated from material recommended by manufacturer.
4. Closures: Closed-cell, expanded, cellular, rubber or crosslinked, polyolefin-foam or closed-cell laminated polyethylene; minimum 1-inch thick, flexible closure strips; cut or premolded to match sheet metal roofing profile. Provide closure strips where indicated or necessary to ensure weathertight construction.
B. Flashing and Trim: Formed from 0.0179-inch thick, zinc-coated (galvanized) steel sheet or aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel sheet prepainted with coil coating. Provide flashing and trim as required to seal against weather and to provide finished appearance.

C. Pipe Flashing: Premolded, EPDM pipe collar with flexible aluminum ring bonded to base.
2.6 EQUIPMENT
A. Portable Roll-Forming Equipment: Manufacturer's standard UL-certified equipment capable of forming sheet metal roofing in profiles indicated.

2.7 FABRICATION
A. General: Custom fabricate sheet metal roofing to comply with details shown and recommendations in SMACNA's "Architectural Sheet Metal Manual" that apply to the design, dimensions (pan width and seam height), geometry, metal thickness, and other characteristics of installation indicated. Fabricate sheet metal roofing and accessories at the shop to greatest extent possible.
1. Standing-Seam Roofing: Form standing-seam pans with finished seam height of 1-1/2 inches.
2. Batten-Seam Roofing: Form batten-seam pans with sides turned up 2-1/8 inches with 1/2-inch flange turned toward center of pan.
B. Fabricate sheet metal roofing to allow for expansion in running work sufficient to prevent leakage, damage, and deterioration of the Work. Form exposed sheet metal work to fit substrates without excessive oil canning, buckling, and tool marks, true to line and levels indicated, and with exposed edges folded back to form hems.
1. Lay out sheet metal roofing so cross seams, when required, are made in direction of flow with higher pans overlapping lower pans. Stagger cross seams.
2. Fold and cleat eaves and transverse seams in the shop.
3. Form and fabricate sheets, seams, strips, cleats, valleys, ridges, edge treatments, integral flashings, and other components of metal roofing to profiles, patterns, and drainage arrangements shown and as required for leakproof construction.
C. Expansion Provisions: Where lapped or bayonet-type expansion provisions in the Work cannot be used, form expansion joints of intermeshing hooked flanges, not less than 1 inch deep, filled with sealant (concealed within joints).

D. Sealant Joints: Where movable, non-expansion-type joints are indicated or required to produce weathertight seams, form metal to provide for proper installation of elastomeric sealant, in compliance with SMACNA standards.
E. Metal Protection: Where dissimilar metals will contact each other, protect against galvanic action by painting contact surfaces with bituminous coating, by applying rubberized-asphalt underlayment to each contact surface, or by other permanent separation as recommended by manufacturers of dissimilar metals or by fabricator.
F. Sheet Metal Accessories: Custom fabricate flashings and trim to comply with recommendations in SMACNA's "Architectural Sheet Metal Manual" that apply to design, dimensions, metal, and other characteristics of item indicated. Obtain field measurements for accurate fit before shop fabrication.
1. Form exposed sheet metal accessories that are without excessive oil canning, buckling, and tool marks and that are true to line and levels indicated, with exposed edges folded back to form hems.
2. Seams for Other Than Aluminum: Fabricate nonmoving seams in accessories with flat-lock seams. Tin edges to be seamed, form seams, and solder.
3. Sealed Joints: Form nonexpansion but movable joints in metal to accommodate elastomeric sealant to comply with SMACNA standards.
4. Conceal fasteners and expansion provisions where possible. Exposed fasteners are not allowed on faces of accessories exposed to view.
5. Fabricate cleats and attachment devices from same material as accessory being anchored or from compatible, noncorrosive metal.
a. Size: As recommended by SMACNA's "Architectural Sheet Metal Manual" for application but not less than thickness of metal being secured.
2.8 FINISHES, GENERAL
A. Comply with NAAMM's "Metal Finishes Manual for Architectural and Metal Products" for recommendations for applying and designating finishes.
B. Protect mechanical and painted finishes on exposed surfaces from damage by applying a strippable, temporary protective covering before shipping.
C. Appearance of Finished Work: Variations in appearance of abutting or adjacent pieces are acceptable if they are within one-half of the range of approved Samples. Noticeable variations in the same piece are not acceptable. Variations in appearance of other components are acceptable if they are within the range of approved Samples and are assembled or installed to minimize contrast.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Examine substrates, areas, and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances, sheet metal roofing supports, and other conditions affecting performance of work.
1. Examine primary and secondary roof framing to verify that rafters, purlins, angles, channels, and other structural panel support members and anchorages have been installed.
2. Examine solid roof sheathing to verify that sheathing joints are supported by framing or blocking and that installation is within flatness tolerances.
3. Verify that substrate is sound, dry, smooth, clean, sloped for drainage, and completely anchored, and that provision has been made for flashings, and penetrations through sheet metal roofing.
B. Examine roughing-in for components and systems penetrating sheet metal roofing to verify actual locations of penetrations relative to seam locations of sheet metal roofing before sheet metal roofing installation.
C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 PREPARATION
A. Lay out and nail or screw wood battens to wood sheathing before installation of sheet metal roofing. Space fasteners as required to resist design uplift, but not more than 18 inches o.c.
B. Install flashings and other sheet metal to comply with requirements specified in 07820 Section "Sheet Metal Flashing and Trim."
C. Install fasciae and copings to comply with requirements specified in Section 07620 "Sheet Metal Flashing and Trim."
3.3 UNDERLAYMENT INSTALLATION
A. Felt Underlayment: Install felt underlayment and building-paper slip sheet on roof sheathing under sheet metal roofing. Use adhesive for temporary anchorage, where possible, to minimize use of mechanical fasteners under sheet metal roofing. Apply at locations indicated below, in shingle fashion to shed water, with lapped joints of not less than 2 inches.
1. Apply from eave to ridge.
2. Apply on roof not covered by self-adhering sheet underlayment. Lap edges of self-adhering sheet underlayment not less than 3 inches, in shingle fashion to shed water.
B. Self-Adhering Sheet Underlayment: Install self-adhering sheet underlayment, wrinkle free, on roof sheathing under sheet metal roofing. Apply primer if required by underlayment manufacturer. Comply with temperature restrictions of underlayment manufacturer for installation; use primer rather than nails for installing underlayment at low temperatures. Apply at locations indicated below, in shingle fashion to shed water, with end laps of not less than 6 inches staggered 24 inches between courses. Overlap

1. Roof perimeter for a distance up from eaves of 36 inches beyond interior wall line.
2. Valleys, from lowest point to highest point, for a distance on each side of. 36 inches Overlap ends of sheets not less than 6 inches.
3. Rake edges for a distance of 36 inches.
4. Hips and ridges for a distance on each side of 36 inches.
5. Roof to wall intersections for a distance from wall of 36 inches.
6. Around dormers, chimneys, skylights, and other penetrating elements for a distance from element of 18 inches.
C. Install flashings to cover underlayment to comply with requirements specified in Section 07620 "Sheet Metal Flashing and Trim."
D. Apply slip sheet over underlayment before installing sheet metal roofing.
3.4 INSTALLATION, GENERAL
A. General: Install sheet metal roofing perpendicular to purlins or supports. Anchor sheet metal roofing and other components of the Work securely in place, with provisions for thermal and structural movement. Install fasteners, solder, welding rods, protective coatings, separators, sealants, and other miscellaneous items as required for a complete roofing system and as recommended by fabricator for sheet metal roofing.
1. Field cutting of sheet metal roofing by torch is not permitted.
2. Rigidly fasten eave end of sheet metal roofing and allow ridge end free movement due to thermal expansion and contraction. Predrill roofing.
3. Provide metal closures at peaks, rake edges, rake walls, and each side of ridge and hip caps.
4. Flash and seal sheet metal roofing with weather closures at eaves, rakes, and at perimeter of all openings. Fasten with self-tapping screws.
5. Locate and space fastenings in uniform vertical and horizontal alignment.
6. Install ridge and hip caps as sheet metal roofing work proceeds.
7. Locate roofing splices over, but not attached to, structural supports. Stagger roofing splices and end laps to avoid a four-panel lap splice condition.
8. Lap metal flashing over sheet metal roofing to allow moisture to run over and off the material.
B. Fasteners: Use fasteners of sizes that will not penetrate completely through substrate.
1. Steel Roofing: Use stainless-steel fasteners.
C. Metal Protection: Where dissimilar metals will contact each other or corrosive substrates, protect against galvanic action by painting contact surfaces with bituminous coating, by applying rubberized-asphalt underlayment to each contact surface, or by other permanent separation as recommended by fabricator of sheet metal roofing or manufacturers of dissimilar metals.

D. Conceal fasteners and expansion provisions where possible in exposed work and locate to minimize possibility of leakage. Cover and seal fasteners and anchors as required for a tight installation.
E. Fascia: Align bottom of sheet metal roofing and fasten with blind rivets, bolts, or self-tapping screws. Flash and seal sheet metal roofing with weather closures where fasciae meet soffits, along lower panel edges, and at perimeter of all openings.
3.5 CUSTOM-FABRICATED SHEET METAL ROOFING INSTALLATION
A. Fabricate and install work with lines and corners of exposed units true and accurate.
Form exposed faces flat and free of buckles, excessive waves, and avoidable tool marks, considering temper and reflectivity of metal. Provide uniform, neat seams with minimum exposure of solder, welds, and sealant. Fold back sheet metal to form a hem on concealed side of exposed edges, unless otherwise indicated.
1. Install cleats to hold sheet metal panels in position. Attach each cleat with two fasteners to prevent rotation.
2. Nail cleats not more than 12 inches o.c. Bend tabs over nails.
B. Seal joints as shown and as required for leakproof construction. Provide low-slope transverse seams using cleats where backup of moisture may occur.
1. Where sealant-filled joints are used, embed hooked flanges of joint members not less than 1 inch into sealant. Form joints to completely conceal sealant. When ambient temperature at time of installation is moderate, between 40 and 70 deg F, set joint members for 50 percent movement either way. Adjust setting proportionately for installation at higher ambient temperatures. Do not install sealant-type joints at temperatures below 40 deg F.
2. Prepare joints and apply sealants to comply with requirements in Section 07920 "Joint Sealants."
C. Soldered Joints: Clean surfaces to be soldered, removing oils and foreign matter.
Pretin edges of sheets to be soldered to a width of 1-1/2 inches, except where pretinned surface would show in finished Work.
1. Do not solder sheet.
2. Do not use torches for soldering. Heat surfaces to receive solder and flow solder into joint. Fill joint completely. Completely remove flux and spatter from exposed surfaces.
D. Provide expansion cleats in roof panels that exceed 30 feet in length.
E. Standing-Seam Roofing: Attach standing-seam metal pans to substrate with cleats, double-nailed at 12 inches o.c. Install pans reaching from eave to ridge before moving to adjacent pans. Lock each pan to pan below with transverse seam. Before pans are locked, apply continuous bead of sealant to top flange of lower pan. Crimp standing seams by folding over twice so cleat and pan edges are completely engaged.
1. Fold over seams after crimping at ridges and hips.

F. Batten-Seam Roofing: Attach batten-seam metal pans to substrate with cleats, starting at eave and working upward toward ridge. Hold cleats in place with wood battens and fold edges of cleats over to hold pans. Hook each pan to pan below with transverse seam. After pans are in place and before batten cap is installed, apply continuous bead of sealant to top flange of each pan. Install batten cap covering wood batten and pan edges and fold batten cap and pan together.
1. Splay upturned edges of pans away from base of wood battens to provide expansion capability.
2. Close batten ends with metal closure. Fold together with pan edges and end of batten cap.
3.6 ACCESSORY INSTALLATION
A. General: Install accessories with positive anchorage to building and weathertight mounting and provide for thermal expansion. Coordinate installation with flashings and other components.
1. Install components required for a complete sheet metal roofing assembly including trim, copings, ridge closures, seam covers, flashings, sealants, gaskets, fillers, closure strips, and similar items.
B. Flashing and Trim: Comply with performance requirements, manufacturer's written installation instructions, and SMACNA's "Architectural Sheet Metal Manual." Provide concealed fasteners where possible, and set units true to line and level as indicated.
Install work with laps, joints, and seams that will be permanently watertight and weather resistant.
1. Install exposed flashing and trim that is without excessive oil canning, buckling, and tool marks and that is true to line and levels indicated, with exposed edges folded back to form hems. Install sheet metal flashing and trim to fit substrates and to result in waterproof and weather-resistant performance.
2. Expansion Provisions: Provide for thermal expansion of exposed flashing and trim. Space movement joints at a maximum of 10 feet with no joints allowed within 24 inches of corner or intersection. Where lapped or bayonet-type expansion provisions cannot be used or would not be sufficiently weather resistant and waterproof, form expansion joints of intermeshing hooked flanges, not less than 1 inch deep, filled with mastic sealant (concealed within joints).
C. Pipe Flashing: Form flashing around pipe penetration and sheet metal roofing. Fasten and seal to sheet metal roofing as recommended by manufacturer.
3.7 ERECTION TOLERANCES
A. Installation Tolerances: Shim and align sheet metal roofing within installed tolerance of 1/4 inch in 20 feet (6 mm in 6 m) on slope and location lines as indicated and within 1/8-inch (3-mm) offset of adjoining faces and of alignment of matching profiles.
3.8 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. Clean exposed metal surfaces of substances that interfere with uniform oxidation and weathering.
B. Clean and neutralize flux materials. Clean off excess solder and sealants.
C. Remove temporary protective coverings and strippable films, if any, as sheet metal roofing is installed. On completion of sheet metal roofing installation, clean finished surfaces, including removing unused fasteners, metal filings, pop rivet stems, and pieces of flashing. Maintain in a clean condition during construction.
D. Replace panels that have been damaged or have deteriorated beyond successful repair by finish touchup or similar minor repair procedures.
3.9 ROOFING INSTALLER'S WARRANTY
