Title: Field Testing of Advanced Electrochemical Sensors Overview Membrane-coated advanced electrochemical sensors (AES) were developed for monitoring pipeline corrosion rate and conductivity of the environment inside natural gas infrastructure. Validating the laboratory results in realistic pipeline environments is a necessary milestone for transferring this monitoring technology to the natural gas industry.

Field Testing Requirements Advanced electrochemical sensors will be tested in the vendor’s facility capable of simulating real pipeline conditions for the sensors. Table 1 shows testing duration and the environmental conditions to be present inside the pipeline during the AES testing.

Outline of Vendor Services: For completing field testing of the AES successfully, the vendor needs to provide the following services:

· Design pipe spool for installation of up to 6 humidity/corrosion sensors into the vendor test loop.

· Support NETL with development of the test plan and provide approval based upon compatibility with the vendor I capabilities.

· Install advanced electrochemical sensors and associated instrumentation per piping configuration plan.

· Perform test program operation specified below in the Field Tests of Advanced Electrochemical Sensors section.

· Vendor will provide 3 ethernet cables from sensor location to the control room.

· Vendor will provide time stamped information on temperature, pressure, gas flow rates, gas composition, and amount of free water present at the sensor location.

· Vendor will provide one 30 second representative fluid flow video from its high pressure 360° viewport for each flow rate tested.

· After completion of test program, pack all sensors and associated equipment into supplied shipping crate(s).

· Provide support for sensors and associated equipment shipment back.

· General Project Support.

Field Tests of Advanced Electrochemical Sensors The vendor will perform hydrostatic tests for each advanced electrochemical sensor and prepare the pipe spool to install the AES sensors inside the natural gas flow loop. After this final preparation, Penn State and NETL researchers will assist the vendor to install the advanced electrochemical sensors. Six sensors will be placed in this flow loop, which will contain free-water and saturated natural gas. Three (3) AES will be placed at the top of the pipe to contact the vapor phase only and three (3) AES will be placed at the bottom of the pipe to contact the aqueous phase. Data collection of the advanced electrochemical sensors will be collected at a flow rate of 15 ft/s, 1000 psi, and three temperatures (70, 80, and 90 °F). A vendor will assist Penn State and NETL researchers to acquire reliable conductivity and corrosion rate data by making sure that the facility operates without problem. Penn State/ NETL researchers will measure conductivity (three 4-electrode electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests) and general corrosion tests (two 3-electrode electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and three linear polarization resistance) in both the aqueous and gaseous environments. The full testing matrix and data points to be collected are shown in Table 2. A total of 864 data points will be generated between each of the six advanced electrochemical sensors (144 data points each.)
