About this file

This document provides specifications for four 5-horsepower surface paddlewheel aerators required by the USDA Agricultural Research Service Warmwater Aquaculture Research Unit. The aerators must have 5 HP, 240/480V 3-phase 60Hz 1750 RPM motors sealed to protect internal components from debris. Each unit requires a 6-foot rotor with sufficient paddles to eliminate cavitation, mounted via a 25:1 gearbox and direct drive coupling. Aluminum floats with an adjustment mechanism and 20-foot galvanized steel frames mounted above water are specified. Mooring arm stakes and corrosion-resistant fasteners must also be included. A one-year manufacturer's warranty is required on all components. Delivery of the four aerators should be made to the Warmwater Aquaculture Research Unit Pond Facility in Stoneville, Mississippi and shall not occur on federal holidays or weekends. Technically acceptable proposals offering the lowest price will be evaluated for award of the federal contract under solicitation number 12405B23Q0494 for this requirement.

Specifications USDA/ARS/Warmwater Aquaculture Research Unit Aquaculture Pond Paddlewheel Aerator - (4) Units

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 BACKGROUND

The mission of the Warmwater Aquaculture Research Unit (WARU) is to develop technologies that improve the efficiency, profitability, and sustainability of fish farming in the United States. This mission is accomplished by developing improved fish strains and hybrids and by developing better production technologies. Advances in applied breeding relies on information derived from research in quantitative and qualitative genetics, reproduction, physiology, immunology, molecular and cellular genetics, and bioinformatics. Hatchery and pond management technologies are developed to provide environmental conditions that maximize performance of genetically improved fish.

Adequately oxygenated water is critical to support animal health and well-being throughout the life cycle of aquatic organisms. A robust, dependable pond surface aerator is crucial when these animals are raised in outdoor ponds.

2.0 OPERATION

Manufacturer shall furnish (4) surface aeration devices that are self-contained with an integrated, adjustable float system and are capable of aerating water at the water surface and creating a flow of water across the pond surface effectively mixing water throughout the pond. Moving water shall mix and agitate the water, spreading oxygenated water throughout the pond. Single, open rotor design shall allow for greater water flow and smaller water droplets that increase the total surface area for oxygen transfer.

3.0 POND AERATOR COMPONENTS

3.1 Motor: The motor shall be 5.0 horsepower, 240/480-volt, 3- phase, 60 Hz, 1750 rpm. The motor unit shall be sealed to protect the internal mechanical seals and bearings from grit and debris. The motor shall corrosion resistant mounting hardware.

3.2 Rotor: Each pond aerator shall have a 6-foot Rotor with paddles of sufficient length, width, and spacing configuration to eliminate cavitation during use. The Rotor shall have a 2-inch header on each end. The mounting mechanism of the rotor shaft to the aerator assembly (frame) shall be composed of a polymer block.

3.3 Gearbox: The gearbox shall have a 25:1 ratio and be shaft-mounted via a direct drive coupling to the motor.

3.4 Floats: The floats shall be aluminum welded construction, that have been leak tested and certified. Corrosion resistant hardware and measurers shall be used to attach the floats to the frame. The floats shall have an adjustment mechanism to allow for the depth of the paddles in the water surface to be changed so that the aerator can be run at maximum efficiency.

3.5 Frame: The frame shall be constructed of hot dipped galvanized steel and mounted so that it always remains above the water surface.

3.6 Mooring Arms: Mooring arms shall be at least 20 feet long and be constructed of corrosion resistant materials and corrosion resistant attachment hardware shall be included. Mooring arm stakes (2 each) shall be included with each aerator.

3.7 Fasteners: All fasteners shall be of corrosion-resistant materials.

3.8 Motor/Gearbox Cover: A cover or shield shall be included that prevents water from splashing on the motor and gearbox.

4.0 WARRANTY INFORMATION

Each unit shall include a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty on all components.

5.0 PLACE OF DELIVERY

USDA/ARS/Warmwater Aquaculture Research Unit Pond Facility, 250 Experiment Station Rd, Stoneville, MS 38776. Delivery should not be made on Federal Holidays or weekends.
