If the proposed compound successfully passes the Qualification Tests and Field Tests, then any unopened containers of the compound shall be retained by the MBTA as a baseline sample. Periodic random samples of deliveries shall be compared to the Baseline Sample. If the proposed compound does not pass these quality inspection tests, the bidder may make arrangements to pick up any unused compound. There shall be no additional costs to the MBTA for qualification testing.

QUALIFICATION TESTS

(if required by the MBTA Contracting Officer)

.Ll Sample Test Requirements: The following qualification tests shall be performed before going on to the field tests. One (1) I-gallon sample shall be supplied by the bidder per Section 7.I. I. Failure of the sample to comply with the following requirements will result in the rejection of the product, as not qualified.

8.1.1 Solubility in Water: Combine 25 mL of the undiluted compound with 225 mL of distilled water and heat to 40 ± l.5°F. Stir the solution for five (5) minutes. Reject the compound if any insoluble matter is visible.

8.1.1.1 Allow the solution to stand for a minimum of 36 hours at a temperature of between 40 °F and 90 °F. Reject the compound ifit has not remained stable and/or homogenous.

8.1.2 Flash Point: Determine the closed cup flash point on the undiluted compound in accordance with ASTM D93. Reject the compound if the flash point is lower than 140 °F.

8.1.3 Pour Point: Determine the pour point of the compound concentrate as directed in ASTM D97. Reject the compound if the pour point is higher than 25 °F.

8.1.4 pH Factor: Determine the pH of the compound concentrate as directed in ASTM E70. The compound pH shall be 7.5 -12.0. Reject the compound if the pH is not within this range.

8.1.5 Stability: Place a 150 mL portion of thoroughly mixed compound concentrate, as received, in each of three (3) stoppered 250 mL-graduated glass bottles. Place each filled bottle in the temperature environment indicated in Table One for one (I) hour.

At the end of the one (1) hour period, bring all three (3)jars to a temperature of25 ± I °C (77 ± 2 °F). Observe the compound in the jars; any evidence of layering, separation, or non-homogeneity shall be cause for rejection of the compound. Ifno marked differences occur, the compound shall be considered satisfactorily stable.

8.1.6 Rinsing Properties: The compound shall be free-rinsing when tested as follows:

8.1.6.1 Synthetic Hard Water: Synthetic Hard Water shall be made by dissolving the hard water salts in a small portion of distilled water, then transferring the solution quantitatively to a liter volumetric flask and filling the flask to volume. The synthetic hard water shall be made to the following formula:

0.264 gram/liter CaOh

0.295 gram/liter MgS04

8.1.6.2 Test Procedure: Dissolve 2.0 mLs of compound as completely as possible in 98 mLs of synthetic hard water in a clean 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask at a temperature of25 ± 2°C (77 ± 3.6 °F). Stopper the flask and shake vigorously for one (I) minute; pour out the solution. Rinse the flask three (3) times by the same procedure using 75 mLs of synthetic hard water without compound. Invert the flask and allow to dry; examine for any residue not rinsed from the interior. Reject the compound if the flask contains more residue after being dried than a similar flask allowed to dry after rinsing with only synthetic hard water.

8.1.7 Corrosion: The following corrosion tests shall be performed on 2 inch by 6 inch samples of:

1. AISI 301 Stainless Steel

2. 6063 or 6061 Aluminum

8.1.7.I Clean each of the test samples with a mixture of equal parts of alcohol and acetone. Heat the test samples to 175 °F for 30 minutes, then allow to cool. Weigh the test samples.

8.1.7.2 Prepare a solution of the cleaning compound and distilled water at a dilution factor of I to I. Pour the solution into a beaker until it covers the test sample. Cover the beaker and heat the solution and the samples to 130 °F for 24 hours. Remove the test samples from the solution and rinse thoroughly with cold water and acetone. Heat the test samples to 175 °F for 30 minutes, then allow to cool.

8.1.7.3 Examine the samples for evidence of staining, discoloration, pitting, etching or corrosion. If found, reject the compound.

8.1.7.4 Weigh the test samples and compare them with their weights prior to immersion. Reject the compound if there is a change in weight greater than

0.10 mg/in2/hr for the AISA 301 Stainless Steel and 1.25 mg/in2/ln·for the 6063 or 6061 Aluminum.

8.1.8 Effect on Painted Surfaces: Perform ASTM F502 using compound that is diluted with distilled water for normal cleaning conditions (as defined in Section One) for exterior cleaning shall be I part compound to 50 parts water. Reject the compound if any evidence of streaking, discoloration or blistering of the paint is found or if a decrease in film hardness of more than 2 pencils occurred.

8.1.9 Suds Testing: Perform the suds test in accordance with Federal Standard No. 536, Method 2001.2. Reject the cleaning compound if the net volume of foam is greater than 120 percent of the volume ofliquid.

8.1.10 Effects on Plastics: Prepare a solution of compound that is diluted with distilled water for normal cleaning conditions (as defined in Section One) for exterior cleaning shall be 1 part compound to 50 parts water. The diluted compound shall not craze, stain, and discolor acrylic plastic, type A or Bas determined per ASTM F484 on specimens stressed at 3,000 psi for eight hours.
