1.2 SUBMITTALS
A. See Section 03 00 00.
1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. The Contractor shall comply with the provisions of the codes, specifications and standards shown in detail in Section 03 00 00. All codes can be obtained from their respective issuers. ASTM Specifications as referenced are made a part of the project. However, if they are in conflict with Uniform Building Code, the building code shall govern.
PART 2. PRODUCTS
A. See Section 03 0000.
PART 3. EXECUTION
3.1 PREPARATION FOR PLACEMENT
A. General: Assure that all reinforcing is properly and securely positioned and tied. Verify that all required sleeves, anchors, slots, inserts, conduit boxes and similar items have been properly located and secured to prevent displacement during concrete placement. Determine that all expansion joints, felt strips, construction and control joints are properly located and formed.
Assure that equipment is clean and that all debris is removed from the forms, or other places receiving concrete. Reinforcing to be free of ice and snow. Assure that forms are lined, oiled or wetted as specified for the particular usage. During freezing weather the use of water to wet forms is prohibited. Immediately prior to pour, dampen sub-grade for slabs on grade.
Remove water from places of deposit. Remove latence and unsound material from the surface of hardened concrete and moisten surfaces before new concrete is placed.
3.2 REVIEWS BY THE ARCHITECT
A. Notify the Architect 24 hours in advance of all concrete placement. The site must be reviewed by
Architect or field representative. Review by the Architect of the concrete placement shall not relieve the Contractor to produce the finished concrete required by the provisions of the Drawings and Specifications.
B. Immediately in advance of placing concrete, excavations, forms, reinforcements, inserts, etc. may be reviewed by the Architect and if any part of the work is determined to be unsatisfactory, the concrete work shall not proceed until after all defects have been remedied and the approval of the Architect has been obtained.
3.3 PLACING CONCRETE
A. Conveying: Convey concrete from the mixer to place of deposit using wheeled vehicles, chutes, tremies, pumping equipment or other equipment. Assure as nearly as possible a continuous flow
EC1 Addition 030313 - 2 of concrete at the delivery end. Concrete shall be delivered without segregation of material during the conveying operations. Provide runways for wheeled conveying equipment. Do not wheel conveying equipment over reinforcement and do not support runways on reinforcement.
Assure that screeds are accurately set and rigidly secured to withstand pouring operations.
B. Placing: Deposit concrete as near as possible to final position. Excessive "pushing" of material from one position to another is prohibited. Place concrete in a condition that it is plastic and "flows" between reinforcing, mixes well with previous layers. To prevent loss of excessive concrete volume as the placed material is drying it is recommended the Contractor plan on using "ASTM C-494, type A superplasticizer admixture" for increasing and providing the free movement of concrete during placement. Add the superplasticizer at the concrete placement site in quantities recommended by the manufacturer of the product for the desired slump values. Slumps up to 10" are possible without any decrease in concrete strength. If drops greater than five (5') feet are required, use a tremie or other method approved by the Architect. Complete all panels, sections, etc., before cessation of concrete placement.
C. When placing new concrete adjacent or over "old" concrete use a concrete bonding agent similar to Dewey & Almy "Daraweld", Larson Products "Weldcrete" or approved equal mixed and applied per the manufacturer's directions.
D. Compaction: Consolidate all concrete with suitable vibrating equipment. Contractor shall have on hand or an immediate source of spare vibrating equipment. Do not use the vibrating equipment in fresh concrete excessively, to transport material or for mixing fresh material with previously set concrete.
3.4 CONCRETE FINISHING
A. General: Form tie holes, voids, gravel pockets, and finish of exposed surfaces shall have all fins and loose materials removed to a smooth surface and voids filled with a dry cement mortar and rammed in place to provide a solid uniform surface matching the existing concrete surface. Use a Carborundum stone and leave the surface clean and smooth.
B. Slabs, sidewalks and exterior paving:
1. Slab surfaces shall be finished by screeding to the required finish level and when free of all tool marks, the surface shall be given the specified finish. Tamping is not recommended by ACI. Finish slabs shall be level and in a true plane with a tolerance for deviation of not more than 1/8" in ten (10') feet. Note! Addition of water to increase slump will cause depressions in the slab which exceed this tolerance causing final slab grinding.
2. Joints in sidewalks shall be grooved at right angles to the sidewalks at intervals equal to the width or a maximum of 5' o.c, unless otherwise shown on the Drawings. Grooves shall be 1" deep.
3. Slope across width for drainage: 1/8" per foot slope all walks, etc.
4. All interior floors shall have a second troweling to produce a smooth "hard" troweled, burnished finish. All exposed interior slabs, reinforced with fibers, shall be finished in such a manner that there are NO EXPOSED FIBERS remaining after final troweling.
5. Where slabs abut curbing or other concrete construction install a continuous 1/2" preformed bituminous expansion material. Similar joints shall be installed in straight runs of walks at not over 20' o.c. Joint material shall extend from finish level to 1/4" below beginning level of concrete.
6. Exposed Aggregate finish slabs (where noted on the drawings), shall be of local brown rock approved by the Architect. Size shall be from ¼” to ¾” maximum dimension. Clean and wet thoroughly (drain off excess water) before applying.
7. Placing and embedding aggregate: Immediately after the slab has been screeded and darbied, the selected aggregate should be scattered by hand-evenly distributed so that the entire surface is completely covered with a single layer. Special care should be taken in covering the edge to ensure a uniform appearance.
8. The initial embedding of the aggregate is usually done by patting with the darby or the flat side of the strike-off rod. After the aggregate is embedded and as soon as the concrete will support the weight of mason on kneeboards, the surface should be hand-floated with a
EC1 Addition 030313 - 3 magnesium float or darby. This operation should be performed thoroughly so that all aggregate is completely embedded just beneath the surface. The grout should completely surround and slightly cover all aggregate with no holes or openings left in the surface.
Following this floating, a reliable retarder shall be spayed or brushed on the surface according to the manufacturer’s recommendation.
9. Exposing the aggregate: Proper timing is quite critical in exposing aggregate, a test panel should be made and tested to determine the best time to begin. Exposing should be done as soon as the grout can be removed by simultaneously brushing and flushing with water without overexposing operations, kneeboards must be used with special care. If possible, this should be avoided because of risk of breaking aggregate bond.
10. Curing: Exposed aggregate slabs should be cured thoroughly. Care must be taken that the method of curing does not stain the surface. Straw, earth, and some types of building paper may cause staining.
11. Provide two test panels 24’ x 24’ for Architect’s approval.
C. Walls and beams:
1. Formed concrete basic finish: After removal of forms, remove loose material and fins from concrete surface. Grout fill honeycombs, tie holes and other pockets or voids in concrete surface. At areas to be grouted, remove unsound concrete, clean away any debris, thoroughly wet surfaces, brush coat with neat cement and fill with mortar packed solidly into void. Completely fill all holes passing through walls. Use mortar consisting of one part white and normal cement, two parts sand passing a No. 16 screen, and as little water as necessary for handling and placing. Blend cements in proportions as to secure a color match in unpainted areas when dry. Finish exposed patchwork flush with and matching adjoining surfaces. Damp cure patchwork for 72 hours.
2. Smooth finish: Use for all exterior vertical and overhead concrete surfaces that will be exposed as finish work, except where otherwise specified. Use steel forms or line forms with 3/16" pressed wood or 1/4" plywood. Install sheets as large as possible. All joints shall have smooth, even, closed edges. Grind marks and fins, prominent grain indentations, bulges and/or depressions. Finish surfaces shall be uniformly smooth and washed clean.
3. Rubbed finish (where called for and for all interior exposed concrete): Fins and other projections shall be carefully removed, offsets leveled, and damaged places repaired.
Surfaces shall be rubbed with cement or abrasive bricks and water. Do not use mortar or grout in this rubbing process. After all form marks and other blemishes are removed, prepare an area where the finish is uniformly clean and smooth, a 48" square required to be inspected and approved by the Architect for all surfaces of this type.
4. Curbs and gutters: Joints shall be grooved at 10' o.c. perpendicular to the sides with contraction joints not over 10' o.c. and expansion joints not over 40' o.c. All concrete sidewalk abutments shall have a 1/2" expansion joint installed.
5. Concrete Columns: All exterior poured-in-place round concrete columns to have a sandblasted finish. Prepare surfaces to be sandblasted same as “Rubbed Finish” surfaces.
Lightly sandblast prepared surfaces to produce a uniform sand texture without exposing concrete aggregate. Prepare a sample area for approval by the Architect
3.5 CONCRETE JOINTS
A. Joints: Form or construct all joints in concrete work true-to-line and accurately placed.
1. Control, Contraction or Construction Joints: All slabs shall be saw-cut immediately after final finish troweling is complete. Saw joints, 1/4 the depth of the slab and not over 12 feet o.c. unless shown otherwise on Drawings. During hot weather conditions, joints shall be cut 1/4 the depth of the slab at a maximum of 10 feet o.c. Immediately after saw cutting, the joint shall be cleaned. Use metal-keyed, 22 gage, control joints only when authorized by the Architect. If locations are not indicated on Drawings, locate to least impair strength of the structural elements.
2. Beams, girders, brackets, column capitals, haunches and similar parts shall be considered as part of the floor systems and placed monolithically therewith. Locate construction joints
EC1 Addition 030313 - 4 in floors near the middle of the spans of slabs, beams, or girders unless another member of the joint shall be offset a distance equal to twice the width of the beam. Where a joint is made, the hardened surface shall be thoroughly cleaned and all latence removed. Vertical joints shall be thoroughly wetted and slushed with a coat of neat cement grout before placing new concrete. At least two hours shall elapse after depositing concrete in columns and walls before placing concrete in members supported thereon.
3. Expansion Joints: Locate wall expansion joints where all exterior slabs abut building surfaces as shown on the Drawings. Unless otherwise detailed, make joints in slabs 1/2" thick, using premolded asphalt impregnated fiberboard, full thickness of the slab. Finish the edges of slabs at expansion joints with slightly rounded edging tool. In no case shall the reinforcement or other fixed metal items which are embedded in or bonded to the concrete be run continuous through an expansion joint. Locate other slab expansion joints where indicated on the Drawings. If not otherwise shown, divide slab-on grade surfaces into areas not exceeding 900 square feet by locating joints where exterior slabs abut rigid vertical surfaces and along column center lines. Interior slabs on grade and topping slabs shall contain shrinkage compensating cement as specified and shall be poured without expansion joints.
4. Bond-Barrier Joints: Form such joints with 15-lb asphalt saturated felt, full thickness of the slab where interior slabs abut rigid vertical surfaces, wrapped around pipe and conduit penetrations, and elsewhere as shown on Drawings.
3.6 EMBEDDED ITEMS
A. Anchor Slots: Use only approved type galvanized metal with wood or fiber insert, set in true vertical position and anchored securely in place. Provide for masonry abutting concrete and for masonry veneer and furring, one slot for each abutment, not more than 18" o.c. for veneer and furring.
B. Work of Other Trades: Allow other trades time and facilities to install necessary embedded items.
3.7 WEATHER RESTRICTIONS
A. Cold weather placement: Place concrete only if the air temperature is above 40 degrees F.
and rising. Concrete may be placed, after approval by the Architect, if the materials are preheated. Concrete after placement shall be maintained at 50 degrees or higher for 4 days (normal cement) or 3 days (high early strength cement). Leave protection in place one day after heating is discontinued. Concrete shall not be placed when snow, rain, or blowing sand are expected.
B. Hot weather placement: During low humidity, high temperature or wind take suitable precaution to avoid premature drying of fresh concrete during finishing and curing. Concrete shall be protected from "flash" set, loss of slump, cold joints, shrinkage surface cracks, etc.
3.8 CURING
A. Base Bid: Sealing of exposed to view concrete floors. All floors which are scheduled in the Room
Finish Schedule as “Concrete with Sealer” are to receive the “Ashford Formula” system as manufactured by Concrete Chemical Company, Springville, Utah. System is to be applied in accordance with manufacturer’s printed instructions.
B. Additive Alternate #1: If Additive Alternate #1 (Epoxy Flooring) is accepted, all floors shall be protected against moisture loss by moist curing. The Contractor shall instigate the process immediately after final troweling, or floating of concrete section placed.
1. Apply two (2) coats of membrane-curing compound at right angles to each other.
2. After concrete placement, all surfaces shall be protected against construction loads, marring by equipment and personnel movements.
3.9 CLEAN-UP
A. General: At the completion of each concrete installation, all forms, debris and other material resulting from the concrete installation shall be removed from the site at the Contractor's expense and his location.
