About this file
This document provides revised guidelines for capturing Locarno classification data for design patent applications. The contractor responsible for patent data capture will initiate a printer rush to retrieve corrected classification information from the USPTO in four situations: when the classification is missing from the claimed section of the application document; when the classification in the claimed section is incomplete with missing digits before or after the separator; when the classification has more than two digits on either side of the separator; or when the classification in the claimed section is illegible. The contractor will also initiate a rush if multiple classifications are listed in the claimed section. For classifications with one digit on either side of the separator, the contractor will pad with leading zeros during capture.

REVISED PRINTER RUSH GUIDELINES FOR LOCARNO CLASSIFICATION
The information in this bulletin will be included in the 2020 revision of
DATA ENTRY MANUAL FOR NON-UTILITY PATENT DOCUMENTS,
OTHER THAN PATENT APPLICATION PUBLICATIONS.
***This bulletin is effective immediately.***
See DATA ENTRY MANUAL FOR NON-UTILITY PATENT DOCUMENTS, OTHER THAN PATENT APPLICATION PUBLICATIONS, Section I. DESIGN PATENT, Columns, International (Locarno) Classification Data..
The Pre-Capture Verification information is superseded by what is shown below.
Pre-Capture Verification
The design application’s IIFW source document should show one complete Locarno classification in the CLAIMED section. Any Locarno classifications in the NON-CLAIMED section of the IIFW document will be disregarded and will not be captured. The PaDaCap contractor will initiate a printer RUSH in any of the following circumstances:
The Locarno classification is missing from the CLAIMED section of the IIFW.
The Locarno classification in the CLAIMED section of the IIFW is incomplete—that is, there are no digits before the separator (slash or hyphen), or there are no digits after the separator (slash or hyphen).
NOTE: In the event that the IIFW shows one digit on either side of the separator (slash or hyphen), the PaDaCap contractor will not do a RUSH, but during capture will pad with leading zeros. For example, if the IIFW shows 6/1, Grant Yellow Book and PostScript® and Grant Red Book will show 06-01.
The Locarno classification in the CLAIMED section of the IIFW shows more than two digits on either side of the separator (slash or hyphen). For example, 155/99, 15/311, or 155/199.
NOTE: The PaDaCap contractor will not do a RUSH merely because the letter D is present in the source. For example, Locarno classification D17/04 on the IIFW would be captured as 17-04 with no need for a RUSH.
The Locarno classification in the CLAIMED section of the IIFW is illegible.
There are multiple Locarno classifications in the CLAIMED section of the IIFW.
