About this file

This document is an Accessibility Technical Assistance guidance document from California, specifically addressing visual character requirements for directional and informational signs, referencing the California Building Code Title 24, Chapter 11B and the 2010 Standards for Accessible Design. The technical guidance provides comprehensive specifications for signs used in interior and exterior spaces, covering applicability to various sign types such as rules of conduct, directional signs, and accessible means of egress, with specific exceptions for building directories, temporary signs, and signs in non-public detention facility areas.

The document details precise technical requirements for sign design, including non-glare finish, installation height (ranging from 40-80 inches above floor), and intricate character specifications. These specifications cover character format (horizontal), contrast (light on dark or dark on light), style (avoiding italic or decorative fonts), line and character spacing, character proportion, and character thickness. A detailed table provides minimum character height requirements based on horizontal viewing distance and height from floor to character baseline, with recommended fonts including Arial, Calibri, Verdana, and Helvetica. The guidance appears intended to ensure sign legibility and accessibility for individuals with varying visual capabilities.
