STATEMENT OF WORK
TASK TITLE
Opportunistic tagging of juvenile sablefish and Pacific cod
BACKGROUND
Sablefish (Anoploma fimbria) and Pacific cod (Gadus microcephalus) are two of the most important commercial groundfish species in Alaska. While many data exist on adult biology of both species, relatively little is known about the life history of juvenile sablefish or Pacific cod, particularly recruitment dynamics. Increased knowledge of the life history of juvenile sablefish and Pacific cod through tagging, particularly regarding movement, diet, energetics, ageing techniques, and growth could all lend to a better understanding of what contributes to the successful recruitment of post-settlement juvenile fish into the fishery.
OBJECTIVES
Charter a vessel capable of overnight excursions for work along the Alaska Peninsula near Sand Point, AK. Nearshore sampling will be conducted using hook-and-line jigging gear in order to meet the following objectives:
1. Tag and release juvenile (age-1 and 2) sablefish and Pacific cod with spaghetti tags to explore movement patterns in the Gulf of Alaska.
2. Collect stomach contents using gastric lavage techniques for diet analysis.
3. Collect fin clips for subsequent genetic analysis.
4. Collect a small number of mortality fish of each species for diet analysis and energetics measurements using lipid extraction techniques.
SCOPE OF WORK
A vessel is required to locate and sample juvenile sablefish and Pacific cod from multiple locations near Sand Point, AK along the Alaska Peninsula. Jigging will be the preferred method of sampling. The vessel shall accommodate four scientists to: 1) tag and release juvenile (age-1 and 2) sablefish and Pacific cod, 2) collect stomach contents, 3) collect fin clips for genetic analysis, and 4) collect a small number of mortality fish for diet analysis and energetics measurements.
The work specifically consists of locating juvenile sablefish and Pacific cod, using the recommendations of Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) survey location recommendations as well as local knowledge, and hook-and-line jigging to collect samples. Sampled fish will be measured, have a fin and their stomach contents collected, and will then be tagged and released. A small number of mortality fish will also be collected. The contractor will provide the vessel platform, and the government will provide scientific staff and equipment.
SPECIFIC TASKS
The contractor will provide a vessel for transportation to survey sites. Additionally, the contractor will provide food and berthing logistics to scientific field party (2-4), and general support logistics for research operations.
Three well balanced meals, snacks, and galley cleanup will be provided by the contractor. Work generally will be conducted during a 12-hour working day.
Vessel solicitation is for 10 day charter, to include fuel. The likely timeline of events and daily schedule to include:
Day 1- load vessel and depart port (Kodiak or Homer, AK), travel to Alaska Peninsula (near Sand Point, AK) ~ 450 miles Days 2 - continuation of running time depending on departure port, weather, and desired sampling location/ jigging Days 2 - 9: nearshore jigging for juvenile sablefish and Pacific Cod. This work will be conducted either from the anchored vessel, or from a skiff if available. Run time during these days will be minimal (<75 mi).
Days 9/10: travel to port (Kodiak or Homer depending on awarded vessel's home port), unload vessel. ~450 miles
