About this file
This is a Question and Answer document for RFP No. AA-2026-03 issued by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) for Beam Position Monitor (BPM) Chassis Major Assembly – Group A.
Question 1 addresses missing technical documentation files for two printed circuit board assemblies: the AFE RF C PCB (AL-1871-9932) and the PTM RF PCB (AL-1876-8433). LBNL clarified that Item 1's manufacturing package is provided in ODB++ format (not Gerber) as a zipped folder containing "AL-1871-9932_bom.txt" for the bill of materials, with fabrication and assembly drawings embedded in ODB++ layers (ddt, user_fab, user_assy_top). Item 2's manufacturing package is provided in Gerber format as a zipped folder containing "PTM BOM Rev1.txt" for the bill of materials and "Spec Doc Rev1_03032026.pdf" for fabrication and assembly requirements. LBNL confirmed that conformal coating is not required for any items in the package and that testing requirements are limited to electrical testing per IPC-9252 with additional requirements captured in drawing notes. Question 2 concerns the timing and procurement strategy for first article versus production batch PCBs. LBNL responded that PCB fabrication may be performed separately or together at the contractor's discretion; batch requirements apply only to delivery of assembled units, not fabrication sequencing. The response date is April 10, 2026, with all other RFP terms and conditions remaining unchanged.

QUESTION & ANSWER
for
RFP No.: AA-2026-03 - Beam Position Monitor (BPM) Chassis Major Assembly - Group A
Question 1:
After review, we need the files listed in the attached document as well as conformal coating and test requirements:
● Item 1: AFE RF C PCB (AL-1871-9932) turnkey fabrication and assembly
○ AFE RF C BOM (AL-1871-9932-C)
○ AFE RF C Manufacturing Package (AL-1871-9932-L)
● Item 2: PTM RF PCB (AL-1876-8433) turnkey fabrication and assembly
○ PTM RF BOM (AL-1876-8433-C)
○ PTM RF Manufacturing Package (AL-1876-8433-L)
The items listed above in YELLOW were not found in the TDPs I reviewed –
Item 1 (AL-1871-9932) appears to be missing the assembly drawing, fab drawing, Gerbers, and Excel
BOM (AL-1871-9932-C).
Item 2 (AL-1876-8433) appears to be missing the assembly drawing and Excel BOM (1876-8433-C). I found the fab drawing & Gerbers.
I also could not locate any of the conformal coating or testing requirements. We will need to know both prior to quoting.
Question 1 Response from LBNL:
Item 1 "AFE RF C Manufacturing Package (AL-1871-9932-L)" is a zipped folder containing the following files and subdirectories:
- The BOM is file "AL-1871-9932_bom.txt", which can be imported into a spreadsheet application format.
- The manufacturing file format is ODB++, no Gerbers are provided for this design.
- The fabrication and assembly drawings and instructions are in these layers of the ODB++:
ddt user_fab user_assy_top
Item 2 "PTM RF Manufacturing Package (AL-1876-8433-L)" is a zipped folder containing subdirectories and files. The unzipped file structure looks like this:
- The BOM file is "PTM BOM Rev1.txt", which can be imported into a spreadsheet application format.
- The manufacturing file format is Gerber, no odb++ files are provided for this design.
- Fabrication and assembly requirements and notes are combined in drawing "Spec Doc Rev1_03032026.pdf".
- Conformal coating is not required for any items in this package. Please ignore the reference to this possible requirement in the Statement of Work.
- Testing requirements spelled out in the Statement of Work section 5 (Scope of Work) include electrical testing per IPC-9252. Any additional testing requirements are captured in the drawing notes.
Question 2:
My question concerning Statement of Work, AL-1881-4686A document on section 6, Deliverables and Schedule, table 2, First Article for AFE & PTM. Will the first article PCBs be ordered together with the Production PCBs in Batch 2 and Batch 3 at the same time or will the first article PCBs be ordered separately from the Batch 2 and Batch 3. Only after the first articles have been verified before we proceed with the ordering the Production PCBs? Please clarify because it does impact the pricing of the PCBs.
Question 2 Response from LBNL:
PCB fabrication may be performed separately for first article and production batches or together for all batches at the contractor's discretion. In this case, since the design is expected to be the same for all batches, it is common to perform PCB fabrication together, but this is not required by any documents in the work package. The batch requirements only apply to delivery of the assembled units.
All other terms and conditions of this RFP remain the same.
Response Date is April 10, 2026.
