Contract Summary: Route 643 Bridge Replacement, Wythe County, Virginia
This is a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) bid proposal and contract document (Order No. A52, Contract ID C0000117111B62) for bridge replacement work on Route 643 (Silings Road) in Wythe County, located in the Bristol District. The project involves the complete replacement of a bridge structure (Virginia Structure No. 6275) over Cripple Creek that was destroyed by a severe storm in 2015. The work includes construction of two instream piers, two new abutments, removal of existing bridge components, installation of temporary cofferdams and support structures, and placement of precast concrete slab superstructure measuring 3.375 feet by 21 inches by 31 feet. The project requires clearing and grubbing, excavation, asphalt concrete placement, erosion control, guardrail installation, pavement markings, and associated site restoration. The bid was submitted at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, with a contract completion date of September 1, 2027. The project is classified as a Category I bridge replacement project under VDOT specifications.
The contract is funded through federal aid (FHWA Project No. STP-098-1(057)) and includes prevailing wage requirements, Davis-Bacon compliance, and environmental restrictions including time-of-year limitations on instream work (March 15 to June 30) and tree removal (April 1 to November 15) to protect endangered candy darter fish and roosting bat habitat. The contract includes mandatory fuel and steel price adjustment provisions, asphalt material price adjustment capabilities, and a 5 percent bid bond requirement. The project is subject to a Virginia Outdoors Foundation conservation easement on adjacent property, which permits bridge reconstruction activities. The contractor must comply with Section 404 Clean Water Act requirements, implement erosion and sediment control measures, perform all work in the dry using cofferdams, and obtain necessary environmental permits. Controlled blasting may be required with vibration monitoring, pre-blast surveys, and a qualified blaster licensed in Virginia. All work must conform to 2020 VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications and current Virginia Work Area Protection Manual requirements.
