About this file

This is a Statement of Work/Performance Work Statement for repair and calibration services of aerodynamic particle sizers to be performed by TSI Inc.

The contract covers repair and calibration of three Aerodynamic Particle Sizers (serial numbers 1169, 1203, and 72321006) for the CDC/NIOSH Nanotechnology Research Center (PMRD). The period of performance runs from September 30, 2026 through November 30, 2026, with an expected 21-day turnaround once TSI receives the instruments. Task 1 requires TSI to repair the three instruments by bringing them to a calibration flow rate of 5 liters per minute (1 lpm sample flow and 4 lpm sheath flow) and maintaining this rate even with pressure drops up to 50 inH20 at the inlet through microprocessor-controlled volumetric flow control and barometric pressure correction. Task 2 requires calibration for precise and accurate number-size distributions across the 0.37 to 20 micrometer aerodynamic diameter range using time-of-flight techniques and a patented double-crest optical system for particle coincidence detection. Performance standards require a 2% deviation maximum from the standard flow rate (100% inspection) and 95% of samples within ±25% deviation from standard for calibration accuracy (100% inspection). The contractor must possess the capability to calibrate Aerodynamic Particle Sizers using proprietary information. Performance of work will occur entirely at TSI's facility in Shoreview, Minnesota, with delivery of repaired and calibrated instruments to Teresa Barone at CDC/NIOSH/PMRD/HHPB by September 30, 2026.

Statement of Work / Performance Work Statement

Title: Repair and Calibration of Aerodynamic Particle Sizers

Period of performance of this contract is: September 30, 2026- November 30, 2026

SECTION 1 – BACKGROUND

The instrument will be used in combination with aerosol chambers in projects associated with respirable dust, such as Advancing Sampling and Sensing Approaches for a Continuous Respirable Crystalline Silica

Monitor and Analytical Enhancement of Rapid Quartz Analysis. It is a real-time instrument that is capable of aerosol size measurements over a range of 0.5 to 20 micrometers with high precision. The instrument enables the real-time monitoring of the mass-based particle size distribution of an aerosol using a metric

(aerodynamic diameter) that is relevant to occupational health recommendations and regulations. The aerosol size distribution based on aerodynamic diameter is an important reference measurement in many studies in aerosol chambers at NIOSH.

SUBSECTION A – DEFINITIONS

Respirable – size fraction of airborne particles that penetrates to the unciliated region of the respiratory tract

(i.e. penetrates to lungs)

SECTION 2 – PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE

The primary objectives are the (1) repair and (2) calibration of three Aerodynamic Particle Sizers by the manufacturer TSI Inc.

SECTION 3 – SCOPE OF WORK

(1) TSI Inc. shall bring the 3 Aerodynamic Particle Sizers to the calibration flow rate and maintain the calibration flow rate even with a pressure drop at the inlet.

(2) TSI Inc. shall calibrate the 3 Aerodynamic Particle Sizers for precise and accurate number-size distributions.

The expected turnaround time is 21 days for the repair and calibrations once TSI receives the instruments.

SECTION 4 – TASKS TO BE PERFORMED

Task 1: Repair of 3 Aerodynamic Particle Sizers

TSI Inc. shall bring the 3 Aerodynamic Particle Sizers to the calibration flow rate of 5 liters per minute (lpm) (1 lpm for sample + 4 lpm for sheath) and maintain the calibration flow rate, even with a pressure drop of up to 50 inH20 at the inlet by adjusting microprocessor controlled volumetric flow control, barometric pressure correction, and separate pumps for sheath and total flows, to enable the Aerodynamic Particle Sizers to operate under a wide range of conditions and still maintain calibration.

Task 2: Calibration of 3 Aerodynamic Particle Sizers

TSI Inc. shall calibrate the 3 Aerodynamic Particle sizers for precise and accurate number-size distributions for 0.37 to 20 micrometers aerodynamic diameter using a time-of-flight technique, and a patented, double-crest optical system to detect the occurrence of particle coincidence (when more than one particle is in the detection area) and to identify poor signals near the instrument’s lower detection threshold.

SECTION 5 – GOVERNMENT FURNISHED PROPERTY

Aerodynamic Particle Sizer Serial Number 1169

Aerodynamic Particle Sizer Serial Number 1203

Aerodynamic Particle Sizer Serial Number 72321006

SECTION 6 – PLACE OF PERFORMANCE AND CONTRACT SUPPORT HOURS
