Project Description:

Project Conditions

The project is located at Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.

The construction magnitude is between $80M – $120M.

The surrounding area is rural with limited staging located at various locations on the south rim and inner canyon, pre-approved on construction drawings.

Material and equipment delivery will be to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. For work conducted inner canyon, materials and equipment will be required to be flow into specific project sites via contracted helicopter managed by contractor.

The closest cities to the south rim of the Grand Canyon are Williams AZ (60 miles), Flagstaff AZ (80 miles), Pheonix AZ (230 miles); two primary highways to access the south rim are 180 and 64.

The Park will remain open during construction, thus contract activities and logistics must be structured and scheduled to minimize visitor impact; some authorized closures will be permitted as per the construction documents.

The site requires protective measures to ensure the surrounding area remains undisturbed in order to protect cultural and natural resources during construction.

The anticipated period of performance of 915 calendar days including any potential weather shutdown.

There are additional restrictions of work by specific work sites in the construction documents.

Winter and summer construction may be required.

The inner-canyon work require the contractor to contract helicopter(s) and utilize the NPS’s heliport site as logistics staging area and coordinate with NPS heliport operations; some mandatory no fly days will occur due to emergency operations and or weather, contract documents provide more specifics on average shut down days per month.

Contractor housing is limited at the park and the surrounding area, park is in process of building 20 RV site with utilities on the south rim in support of contractor housing for projects on the south rim.

Significant elevation differences between project locations specifically the south rim and inner canyon make for diverse weather conditions and logistics challenges.

Project Scope:

This project will rehabilitate the parks primary water system that provides service to the south rim and inner canyon of the Grand Canyon National Park. Work includes new surface water intake (source) at Bright Angle Creek in the Phantom Ranch Delta that includes pump station, creek stabilization, surface water treatment plant, open cut replacement of water distribution and power system; replacement of water main, power and fiber micro-duct between Havasupai Gardens (former Indian Gardens), water distribution system at Havasupai Gardens, rehabilitation of pump station; replacement of water main via slipline between Havasupai Gardens and the south rim; new surface water treatment plant on the south rim to include new storage tanks and some distribution piping replacement; includes installation of point of use disinfection systems (UV) at upper northern inner canyon at cottonwood and manzanita districts. Limitations on closures and construction areas are specified in the contract documents and are intendended to minimize impacts to visitor, employee and concessions operations throughout the duration of the project.
