About this file

This document provides standards and specifications for a waterline installation project at the German Ridge Campground within the Hoosier National Forest. The project includes demolishing an existing water system including tank, hydrants and faucets. A new 1,800 or 1,850 gallon precast concrete cistern will be installed along with approximately 620 feet of 1-inch CTS SDR 9 250 PSI blue water service pipe to connect the new cistern to seven frost-free hydrants. Materials and installation standards are specified including requirements for pipe, fittings, valves, hydrants, joints, bedding, backfill and pressure testing. The contractor will be responsible for demolition of existing infrastructure, trenching or boring for new lines, installation of the new cistern and waterlines per the specifications, utility locates, and pressure and leakage testing.

German Ridge Campground Waterline Summer 2023

Waterline Installation Standards & Specifications

TELL CITY RANGER DISTRICT

GERMAN RIDGE CAMPGROUND WATERLINE

Hoosier National Forest

1.0 GENERAL

This water system is to provide water to the German Ridge Campground. The installation will start with demolition of the existing water system to include removing the water tank, hydrants, and faucets. A new cistern will be installed in the location of the existing tank after proper excavation and bedding have been completed. From there 1” waterlines and frost-free hydrants will be installed as discussed in the Scope of work and below in the specifications. The water lines can be either trenched or bored in the locations shown on the Site Plan. The exact locations of the hydrants, valves and waterlines will be staked by the Forest Service. The approximate total waterline distance is 620 ft.

a. WORK RESTRICTIONS: Contractor may use on-site toilet facilities. There is no onsite water or electric available. The contractor will be responsible for those items if needed. Conduct all work on weekdays between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM.

Confine site operations to the areas in which work is indicated. Upon completion of work, remove waste materials and debris from site.

b. QUALITY ASSURANCE: Ensure personnel performing the Work are skilled and knowledgeable in the methods needed to produce the required levels of workmanship.

Use materials that comply with applicable standards recognized in the construction industry and perform work in accordance with manufacturer’s installation instructions.

Before proceeding with work, verify layout information shown on the Site Plan. Notify the COR if discrepancies are found. Repair or remove and replace defective construction.

Restore damaged substrates and finishes.

MATERIALS

1.1 Standards and materials selection

a. All materials including pipe, fittings, valves, and frost-free hydrant shall conform to the latest standards issued by the ASTM, AWWA and ANSI/NSF.

b. Pipes and pipe fittings shall be lead free. All products shall comply with ANSI/NSF standards.

1.2 Piping

a. Provide 1” CTS SDR 9 250 PSI Blue Water Service Pipe (or approved equal).

1.3 Joints and fittings

a. Use brass couplings (lead free design) CTS pack-joint connections and stainless-steel insert stiffeners.

1.4 Frost Free Hydrant

a. Hydrant drain requires a gravel pocket or dry well provided. Follow manufactures recommendations on installation instructions.

b. Use a Woodford X34-3 Freeze less Yard Hydrant: 3 ft Bury Deep, 63.8 in Overall Lg, ¾ in FNPT Inlet Size MFR. Model 803SB (or approved equal). Use a brass (lead free design) 90 to connect to the 1” CTS waterline.

1.5 Shutoff Valves

a. Provide 1” Pack Joint (CTS) x Pack Joint (CTS) Curb Stop -T-5300NL (No Lead Bronze) (or approved equal). Brand: Legend Valve. The 2 shutoff valves shall be placed at the ends of the cistern 3 feet from the tank. Install shut off valves in PVC pipes with access covers standing vertically and cut out at the bottom of the pipe for the water line to fit through. Size the PVC pipes for easy access to the valve. Provide 2 tools to turn the valves on and off.

1.6 Cistern

a. Provide a minimum 1800 or 1850-gallon tank size with approximate outside dimensions 121” L x 74” W x 69” H. Use a Rain Brothers, LLC 1800 or 1850 Gallon Precast Concrete Cistern with 24” riser with 24” access (or approved equal). Perform on-site vacuum test of tank to assure water-tight when set in pit.

2 SYSTEM DESIGN

2.1 Pressure

This system will operate on gravity so the operating pressure will be low.

2.2 Diameter

The pipe diameter from the cistern to the frost proof hydrants shall be 1” CTS tubing.

3 INSTALLATIONS OF CISTREN AND WATERLINES

3.1 Standards

Specifications shall incorporate the provisions of the AWWA standards and/or manufacturer's recommended installation procedures.

3.2 Installation

a. Trenching If trenching is selected vs. boring a continuous and uniform bedding that is 4” above and below the 1” pipe shall be provided in the trenches for all buried pipes. Backfill material shall be #11 Indiana limestone tamped in layers around the pipe and to a sufficient height above the pipe to adequately support and protect the pipe. Stones over 2” found in the trench shall be removed for a depth of at least 4 inches below the bottom of the pipe. Water lines to be buried a minimum of 30” in depth.

b. Cistern Placement

1. Cistern pit must be bedded with 6” of Indiana 53’s.

2. Pit must be approved by supplier for accessibility by a large crane truck to back up to the edge, free of obstruction from power lines, tree limbs, or any other obstacles that could impede the truck or compromise the safety of the crane operator or equipment.

3. Over dig pit 1” on all sides for recommended excavation by supplier.

4. Tank MUST be backfilled within 12 hours of water entering the cistern.

It is recommended that the cistern be filled halfway with water and that the tank be backfilled immediately after setting the tank. If tanks are left empty and pit is not backfilled, and if rain or water enters the pit, the tanks can float! Please take precautions by ensuring immediate backfill upon setting the tank and/or getting water in the tank. Keep water below the tank seam until tank has been completely backfilled or until cistern will push out tank walls and cause damage to concrete. Backfill helps support the walls and equalize pressure - these are underground tanks, not above-ground tanks.

5. Tank may be backfilled with excavated dirt/soil as long as such fill is free of stone fist-size or larger.

3.3 Locate wire and bury tape

Locate wire (tracer wire) shall be taped to the waterline. 2-foot of fill can then be added then a “bury tape” placed in the ditch before final cover.

3.4 Cover

Water mains shall be covered with sufficient earth or other insulation to prevent freezing. The minimum depth of the trench shall be 30 inches.

3.7 Pressure and leakage testing

Installed pipe shall be pressure tested and leakage tested in accordance with the appropriate AWWA Standards.

3.8 Disinfection

New water mains shall be disinfected in accordance with AWWA Standard C651. The specifications shall include detailed procedures for the adequate flushing, disinfection, and microbiological testing of all water mains. In an emergency or unusual situation, the disinfection procedure shall be discussed with the reviewing authority.

3.9 Utility Locates

Contractor responsible to call Indiana 811 or visit indiana811.org for utility locates before digging.

4 DEMOLITION

4.1 Existing Cistern

Contractor to remove existing cistern and dispose of it in a licensed landfill.

4.2 Existing Faucets and hydrants

Contractor to remove and backfill 7 non-frost-free hydrants 2 frost-free hydrants associated with the existing cistern within the German Ridge Campground Loop (estimated 13 items). This includes all supporting posts and appurtenances. It does not include the buried water line which will stay.
