About this file

This document is a Request for Acquisition (RA) Salient Characteristics document for the United States Marine Band, seeking to procure a specific handmade violin for Fiscal Year 2025. The requirement is for one Gonzalo Bayolo Violin (circa 2024), with extremely detailed specifications focused on musical quality, construction, and performance characteristics. Key requirements include the violin being handmade from high-quality wood (quarter cut maple for back, sides, and scroll; spruce for top), with precise acoustic properties such as balanced resonance, strong projection, consistent sound quality across all notes, and the ability to blend within the Marine Band's musical ensemble.

The document specifies that the violin must be manufactured in the U.S.A. or comply with specific trade agreement regulations, with delivery required to the United States Marine Band at Marine Barracks Washington Annex in Washington, D.C. The procurement emphasizes subjective evaluation by musicians and the Band's Director, who will determine the instrument's suitability based on its musicality, sound projection, and compatibility with the ensemble's elite playing level. The required delivery date is noted as "the soonest possible delivery date", and there are no incidental services associated with this acquisition.

Salient Characteristics:

• Handmade, unique, no serial number

• Made of highest quality wood equivalent to that of a professional (not from factories), elite level which ensures best sound and projection that is required to match the sound of the musical ensemble.

• The back is from one piece of quarter cut maple with medium flames ascending from the treble to bass sides.

• The sides and scroll are from quarter cut maple with medium flames

• The top is from two pieces of spruce with medium grain

• The sound and projection must blend well with the other instruments in the section and allows the musician to play without strain while still producing good sound and resonance in order to avoid any additional wear and tear on the instrument or on the musician’s body.

• Instrument’s sound is required to blend within the ensemble and sustain the overall, elite musical quality of the United States Marine Band.

• Professional-level violins are required due to their quality, sound projection, and blend within our musical ensemble. However, professional level violins are all handmade (not in factories), so it can be a very nuanced search with many variants depending on maker.

• Violins should be able to withstand standard string tension of 20-25kg without bridge sinking or neck bending.

• Needs to withstand reasonable changes in temperature and humidity without cracking and warping. Should not crack from minor bumps.

• Glue should be applied cleanly and strongly and not be visible once dry.

• Should have balanced resonance across the spectrum without dead zones.

• Quality projection should retain clarity and volume at long distances.

• Sound quality does not change between the quietest and loudest playable note.

• Should have a strong fundamental first harmonic and a rich distribution of higher harmonic brightness without harshness.

• Sound should be equally full and balanced from the highest note to the lowest note.

• Evaluation of the instrument is subjective to each musician and the Director of the Marine Band since musicality involves perception not just numbers. Therefore it is the musician and the Director who can reasonably determine what instrument blends best within the elite playing level and sound of the United States Marine Band.
