About this file

This is a Technical Specification document for Titanium-Niobium alloy materials to be used in PIP-II 650 MHz Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavities at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The specification establishes material requirements, testing standards, and documentation protocols for suppliers providing this specialized alloy.

The material must meet specific chemical composition requirements with Titanium at 55±1%, Niobium as the remainder, and strict limits on impurities including Hydrogen (≤0.0045%), Oxygen (≤0.1%), and other elements such as Aluminum, Carbon, and Chromium (each ≤0.01%). Hardness testing per ASTM E92, E384, or manufacturer equivalents must demonstrate values between 130-170 HV, while mechanical strength testing per ASTM E8 must achieve minimum yield strength of 60,000 psi (410 MPa) and minimum tensile strength of 65,000 psi (450 MPa). Material finish must be free of injurious external and internal imperfections, with samples taken after all metallurgical processing and annealing but before work hardening. Suppliers must provide comprehensive documentation including traceability information (lot number, serial number, heat treatment number) and certification with chemical analysis, hardness test, and tension test reports showing the testing standards used. Material packaging must prevent damage during transportation with specific details to be coordinated prior to shipment. The specification references ASTM B884-11, ASTM B265, ASTM E92, ASTM E384, and ASTM E8, allowing industry or manufacturer standards as alternatives if identified and approved by Fermilab.

1 Introduction

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL, Fermilab) designs and constructs superconducting particle accelerators. This specification addresses Titanium-Niobium alloy for superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities, which are a key component of particle accelerators.

Components are fabricated from stock by machining or other metal-forming processes.

Components are joined by electron-beam welding or TIG welding. Cavities are operated in a cryogenic vacuum environment, requiring pressure certifications and material traceability. All of these factors motivate the content of this specification.

2 Reference Documents

The requirements in this specification are originated or modified from ASTM B884-11 (reapproved 2019) and ASTM B265. This specification refers to ASTM Testing methods.

However, industry or manufacturer’s standards are allowed as long as those standards are identified and approved by Fermilab.
