About this file
The document is an Abstract Instructions and Submission Template for the Exponentiating Mathematics (expMath) program, a DARPA Research and Technology Development initiative focused on using artificial intelligence to accelerate mathematical research. The template provides detailed guidelines for proposing teams to submit a two-page abstract that must include sections on goals and impact, technical approach, capabilities/management plan, and cost and schedule, with specific requirements for formatting, font size, and content.
The federal grant opportunity aims to develop AI capabilities for auto decomposition and auto(in)formalization of mathematical proofs, targeting two technical areas (TA1 and TA2) that seek to address slow mathematical progress through AI innovation. Proposers are encouraged to submit abstracts before full proposals, with DARPA reviewing submissions and providing recommendations. The program will use cooperative agreements or procurement contracts, with an estimated 36-month performance period. While a specific award value is not explicitly stated, the program seeks teams with strong expertise in mathematics and artificial intelligence to fundamentally reshape mathematical research practices.

Exponentiating Mathematics (expMath) A1: Abstract Instructions and Submission Template Use of this template is required for all abstract submissions to this BAA. Proposers must include all information in the A1 Abstract Instructions and Submission Template (this documents) and the A2 Abstract Summary Slide Template to constitute a full abstract submission.
The Abstract Instructions and Submission Template (this document) must include all components described herein and must be submitted in PDF or Microsoft Word formats under the file naming convention “Organization_Abstract Submission”.
All submissions must be written in English, and all pages shall be formatted for printing on 8-1/2 by 11-inch paper with 1-inch margins and font size no smaller than 12-point. Font sizes of 8 or 10-point may be used for figures, tables, and charts.
Abstracts shall not exceed a maximum of 2 pages. Abstracts should be at the UNCLASSIFIED level. All proprietary data and information should be appropriately marked.

Proposers are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract before submitting a full proposal. DARPA will respond to abstracts with a statement as to whether DARPA:
a. recommends the proposer submit a full proposal or,
b. does not recommend the proposer submit a full proposal with a rationale for this decision.
Regardless of DARPA’s response to an abstract, proposers may submit a full proposal. DARPA will review all conforming full proposals using the published evaluation criteria and without regard to any comments resulting from the review of an abstract. Proposers should note that a favorable response to an abstract is not a guarantee that a proposal based on the abstract will be selected for award negotiation. It is DARPA policy to attempt to reply to abstracts within thirty calendar days. These official notifications will be sent via email to the Technical POC and/or Administrative POC identified on the abstract cover sheet.
Abstracts must be submitted per the instructions outlined herein and received by DARPA no later than the due date and time listed in Section I of the BAA. Abstracts received after this time and date may not be reviewed. Please visit Proposer Instructions and General Terms and Conditions for instructions on how to submit your abstract through the Broad Agency Announcement Tool. Regardless of instrument type desired, abstracts should not be submitted through Grants.gov.

[Content requirements are stated in blue font and should be deleted prior to abstract submission. Abstract instructions should also be deleted prior to abstract submission.] Goals and Impact Describe what is being proposed and the impact of the effort (qualitatively and quantitatively) if successful.
Technical Approach Provide answers to the following questions:
· What is the basis of the technical approach? Within your answer, clearly delineate the technical approach to the state of the art.
· What are the key innovative aspects of the technical approach?
· Outline how the technical approach is capable of achieving the program goals and metrics? Answers should include preliminary results or arguments on the potential success of the technical approach.
For TA1 only:
· How does the technical approach enable rapid iteration between abstraction and code execution to accelerate progress in mathematics?
· How does the technical approach scale and generalize?
For TA2 only:
· Describe the unique advantages and the efficiency of the evaluation system relative to the metrics.
Capabilities/Management Plan Provide a brief summary of the expertise of the team, including subawardees and key personnel. While teaming arrangements do not need to be finalized at the time of abstract submission, mention of potential teaming/collaboration arrangements is highly encouraged. Identify a principal investigator for the project and include a description of the team’s organization, including roles and responsibilities.
Proposers are reminded abstracts addressing TA1 are expected to have strong expertise in both mathematics and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Abstracts addressing TA2 are expected to have strong expertise in designing evaluations of AI technologies as well as experience in mathematics.
Cost and Schedule Provide a cost estimate (ROM) for resources (e.g. labor, materials) and any subawardees anticipated over the thirty-six (36)-month program.
Bibliography (Optional) Provide a brief bibliography with links to relevant papers, references, reports, etc.
