Statement of Need

National Park Service

Supply Class B Fire Rated Red Cedar Shingles for the Lynch & Kennedy Haberdashery Building within Klondike Gold Rush NHP, Alaska.

March, 14th 2024

Background:

The Lynch & Kennedy building was constructed on the north side of Sixth Avenue east of

Broadway (lot 11, Block 23), for the U. S. Army as a barracks building in October – November

1900. It was moved to the present location and opened as a haberdashery and dry goods store in

September 1908 after it had been extensively altered including adding a large false front to match the front on the adjacent building. Marie Kallstrom sold the building to the NPS in August

1977. It then underwent emergency stabilization in 1979-1980. During 1991-1993, the building was restored to its 1908-1915 period of significance with the interior adapted for contemporary use.

Statement of Need:

The current cedar shake shingles on the Lynch and Kennedy Haberdashery is original to its NPS restoration in 1991-1993. After 31 years is deteriorating and is beyond the expected life cycle.
