Salient Characteristics Special Order S21078 and 79 Passive Flux Meter Project
The USGS New Mexico Water Science Center (WSC) has a project requirement for determining contaminant concentrations and water flow in ground water wells. The project requires (1) delivery of commercially available Passive Flux Meters (PFM’s), (2) lab analysis services, and (3) a detailed data report, per the salient specifications and requirements listed below. The WSC also requires a staggered delivery schedule for the PFM’s as specified below.
SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS:
PFM’s
1. Shall consist of self-contained devices, that are inserted into a well or boring, for measuring water and contaminant fluxes in porous media.
2. Shall be capable of determining contaminant mass flux and ground water flow (Darcy) velocity.
3. Shall be capable of simultaneous evaluation of both water and contaminant fluxes under natural gradient conditions.
4. Shall be capable of cumulative measurement of the contaminant flux, making the results increasingly less sensitive to daily fluctuations in groundwater flow or contaminant concentrations
5. Shall require no electrical power or pumping to operate.
6. PFM’s shall consist of the following configurations:
· 3 ea. x 5 ft. long PFM’s with 3-inch diameters and 3 sampling intervals per PFM. Shall include 9 total samples analyzed for Darcy velocity and BTEX (Benzene, Toulene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylene) and EDB (Ethylene Dibromide) fluxes.
· 7 ea. x 5 ft. long PFM’s with 4-inch diameters and 3 sampling intervals per PFM. Shall include 21 total samples analyzed for Darcy velocity and BTEX and EDB fluxes.
· 3 ea. x 5 ft. long PFM’s with 5-inch diameters and 3 sampling intervals per PFM. Shall include 9 total samples analyzed for Darcy velocity and BTEX and EDB fluxes.
· 5 ea. x 5 ft. long PFM’s with 4-inch diameters and 3 sampling intervals per PFM. Shall include 15 total samples analyzed for Darcy velocity and PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) fluxes.
· 8 ea. x 5 ft. long PFM’s with 4-inch diameters and 3 sampling intervals per PFM. Shall include 24 total samples analyzed for Darcy velocity only.
Lab Analysis
7. The vendor shall provide lab analysis of all samples as listed above. Samples shall be analyzed to determine the concentration of contaminants absorbed into the PFM and the amount of tracers leached from the PFM. USGS shall send samples for analysis to the vendors’ specified location.
Data Report
8. The vendor shall provide a detailed data report indicating the mass flux and Darcy flux results for all of the zones in which the PFM’s were deployed.
Delivery Schedule
9. PFM’s shall be delivered in accordance with the schedule listed below:
7 days after receipt of award:
5 ea. x 4" diameter PFAS/Darcy PFMs
14 days after receipt of award:
2 ea. x 4" diameter Darcy Only PFMs
35 days after receipt of award:
3 ea. x 3" diameter EDB/BTEX/Darcy PFMs 7 ea. x 4" diameter EDB/BTEX/Darcy PFMs
42 days after receipt of award:
6 ea. x 4" diameter Darcy Only PFMs
56 days after receipt of award:
1 ea. x 5" diameter EDB/BTEX/Darcy PFM
77 days after receipt of award:
2 ea. x 5" diameter EDB/BTEX/Darcy PFMs
