About this file
This document is a Detailed Specifications file for a herbicide application contract for the Susie East Weed Treatment project in Nevada. The project involves treating 4,606 acres for noxious weeds, primarily Scotch thistle and Russian knapweed, located approximately 7 miles northeast of Carlin, Nevada. The treatment area includes 4,508 acres of upland and 98 acres with potential water presence, requiring different herbicide tank mixes. The performance period is estimated from June 2nd to July 18th, with terrain ranging from flat valley bottoms to steep hills with 15-45% slopes.
The contract requires the contractor to supply equipment, work crew, and specific herbicide formulations, including 2,4-D and Chlorsulfuron with non-ionic surfactant and dye. Application methods must account for varying terrain, with potential use of backpack spraying on steeper slopes. Specific application rates are detailed: 32 ounces/acre of 2,4-D for terrestrial areas and 64 ounces/acre for water's edge treatments. The project area borders Susie Creek and includes vegetation such as Wyoming sagebrush, rabbitbrush shrublands, and seeded crested wheat grasslands. Strict guidelines are provided for herbicide application near water sources, with buffer zones of 10-25 feet depending on application method.

1. Target Species: Scotch thistle and Russian knapweed Additional noxious weed species found within the designated contract boundary, and susceptible to chemical intended for use, will also be treated.
2. Treatment Area: A total of 4606 acres including: 4508 acres of upland where no water will be present and therefore will require the terrestrial tank mix, and 98 acres that have the potential for water to be present and will require the use of the water’s edge tank mix. Treatment areas vary in the density of noxious weeds that are within the polygon. Actual weed treatments will be less than that of the treatment area itself.
3. Location of Work Site: Project area is located approximately 7 miles northeast of Carlin, Nevada. The legal description of the treatment area is: T34N, R53E; T35N R53E; and T34N R52E. See Attached Location Maps.
Access to Work Site: Public or private access roads damaged by the Contractor shall be restored, at the Contractor’s expense, to the same condition they were in at the commencement of work.
4. Approximate Performance Period: Period of performance is estimated and timing of treatments will need to be flexible in order to maximize the effects on target weed species. The anticipated treatment window for this project is June 2nd to July 18th and the Contractor must be available during that time period.
5. Requirements of Equipment to be supplied by the Contractor: Sufficient to meet specifications of the contract.
6. Loading Facilities: Use of any loading area on federal or private land, shall be arranged by and at the discretion and risk of the contractor.
7. Work Crew Requirements: Work crew for handling and mixing of chemical and loading equipment shall be furnished by the Contractor.
8. Requirements of Chemical to be supplied by the Contractor: Herbicide, surfactant, and dye shall be used and selected from the attached lists of Approved Herbicide Formulations and Approved Adjuvants for use on BLM land. Colorant/dye must be visible for 3 days after application.
9. Kind of Chemical: 2,4-D + Chlorsulfuron + non-ionic surfactant + dye AND up to water’s edge approved 2,4-D + up to water’s edge approved non-ionic surfactant+ dye
Contractor must provide a list of chemicals intended for use with their bid package.
10. Rate of Application:
· Terrestrial Tank mix: 2,4-D at 32 ounces/acre (0.95 lb. ae/acre) + Chlorsulfuron at 1 ounces/acre (0.0375lb AI/acre) + non-ionic surfactant (Rate as specified on label and compatible with herbicide) + dye.
· Water’s edge tank mix: Up to water’s edge approved 2,4-D (Alligare 2,4-D or equivalent) at 64 ounces/acre (1.9 lb. ae/acre) + up to water’s edge approved non-ionic surfactant (Rate as specified on label and compatible with herbicide) + dye.
11. Remarks and Other Requirements: Apply the spray solution in properly maintained and calibrated equipment capable of delivering the desired volume. Controlling drift is the responsibility of the Applicator.
The Susie East treatment area consists of many hills with drainages and draws that hold intermittently flowing streams. Terrain varies from flat, 2% slopes in the valley bottoms to steep hills with 15-45% slopes. Soils are loamy, deep, and well-drained. Elevation ranges from 5,100 to 5,600 feet. Vegetation consists of semi-dense to dense stands of Wyoming sagebrush and rabbitbrush shrublands, seeded crested wheat grasslands, mixed native forb and grass areas, and some sparse Utah Juniper stands. Susie Creek, a perennially flowing waterway, borders the eastern side of the project area. Two-track roads are concentrated on the north and east side of the project area. The steeper slopes may necessitate backpack spraying.
If water is present during the time of application, the buffers for non-aquatically formulated herbicides will be maintained at 10 feet for application by handgun and 25 feet for application with boom equipment. Spraying up to the water’s edge (within the buffer) will require use of aquatic formulated herbicide and surfactant.
