About this file

This detailed specification document outlines herbicide application requirements for weed treatment on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land near Elko, Nevada. The project involves treating 1,917 acres for noxious weeds, primarily Scotch thistle, across varied terrain including hills, mountain slopes, and drainages with elevations ranging from 5,200 to 6,700 feet. The treatment will utilize specific herbicide mixes (2,4-D + Chlorsulfuron) with non-ionic surfactant and dye, applied during a performance period from June 2nd to July 18th, 2025. The challenging landscape includes dense Utah juniper, pinyon pine forestlands, Wyoming sagebrush, and areas with steep slopes (15-60%), which will require careful application techniques to manage equipment limitations and minimize environmental impact.

DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS

HERBICIDE APPLICATION

2025 Grindstone South Herbicide Weed Treatment

1. Target Species: Scotch thistle Additional noxious weed species found within the designated contract boundary, and susceptible to chemical intended for use, will also be treated.

2. Treatment Area: A total of 1917 acres including: 1890 acres of upland where no water will be present and therefore will require the terrestrial tank mix, and 27 acres that have the potential for water to be present and will require the use of the water’s edge tank mix. Treatment areas vary in the density of noxious weeds that are within the polygon. Actual weed treatments will be less than that of the treatment area itself.

3. Location of Work Site: Project area is located approximately 11 miles south-southwest of Elko, Nevada. The legal description of the treatment area is: T33N, R54E; and T32N, R54E. See Attached Location Maps.

Access to Work Site: Public or private access roads damaged by the Contractor shall be restored, at the Contractor’s expense, to the same condition they were in at the commencement of work.

4. Approximate Performance Period: Period of performance is estimated and timing of treatments will need to be flexible in order to maximize the effects on target weed species. The anticipated treatment window for this project is June 2nd to July 18th and the Contractor must be available during that time period.

5. Requirements of Equipment to be supplied by the Contractor: Sufficient to meet specifications of the contract.

6. Loading Facilities: Use of any loading area on federal or private land, shall be arranged by and at the discretion and risk of the contractor.

7. Work Crew Requirements: Work crew for handling and mixing of chemical and loading equipment shall be furnished by the Contractor.

8. Requirements of Chemical to be supplied by the Contractor: Herbicide, surfactant, and dye shall be used and selected from the attached lists of Approved Herbicide Formulations and Approved Adjuvants for use on BLM land. Colorant/dye must be visible for 3 days after application.

9. Kind of Chemical: 2,4-D + Chlorsulfuron + non-ionic surfactant + dye AND up to water’s edge approved 2,4-D + up to water’s edge approved non-ionic surfactant+ dye

Contractor must provide a list of chemicals intended for use with their bid package.

10. Rate of Application:

· Terrestrial tank mix: 2,4-D at 32 ounces/acre (0.95 lb. ae/acre) + Chlorsulfuron at 1 ounces/acre (0.0375lb AI/acre) + non-ionic surfactant (Rate as specified on label and compatible with herbicide) + dye.

· Water’s edge tank mix: Up to water’s edge approved 2,4-D (Alligare 2,4-D or equivalent) at 64 ounces/acre (1.9 lb. ae/acre) + up to water’s edge approved non-ionic surfactant (Rate as specified on label and compatible with herbicide) + dye.

11. Remarks and Other Requirements: Apply the spray solution in properly maintained and calibrated equipment capable of delivering the desired volume. Controlling drift is the responsibility of the Applicator.

The Grindstone weed herbicide treatment area consists of hills, mountain slopes, fan remnants, and several drainages which hold intermittent flowing streams. Terrain is overall very hilly and steep, with mountain slopes ranging from 15-60%. Soils are gravelly loams with some areas of exposed bedrock and large cobbles. Elevation ranges from 5,200 to 6,700 feet. Three-quarters of the project area consists of dense Utah juniper and pinyon pine forestlands with an understory of Wyoming sagebrush and mixed, native perennial bunchgrasses and forbs. Some of these areas have been burned in the last thirty year and there many dead-standing, and dead-and-down snags. Intact tree stumps are also present, and many of these stumps are sharp and pose a threat to wheeled vehicle equipment. The eastern portion of the project area consists of semi-dense to dense Wyoming sagebrush and rabbitbrush shrublands, with mixed perennial bunchgrasses and native forbs. Cheatgrass and annual forbs like desert Alyssum are found throughout the entire site. The steepness of the hillsides coupled with the dense stands of Utah juniper and dead tree snags from old fires will make treatment difficult for mechanized equipment in many parts of the project area.

If water is present during the time of application, the buffers for non-aquatically formulated herbicides will be maintained at 10 feet for application by handgun and 25 feet for application with boom equipment. Spraying up to the water’s edge (within the buffer) will require use of aquatic formulated herbicide and surfactant.
