AGGREGATE SURFACING

SECTION 02730

PART 1: GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes: This work shall consist of furnishing, placing and compacting a crushed aggregate course on a prepared trail bed in accordance with these specifications and in reasonably close conformity with the lines, grades, thickness, and typical cross section shown on the plans or established by the Contracting Officer.

PART 2: MATERIALS

2.1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Trail Mix Aggregate: Aggregate shall consist decomposed granite specifically used for the purpose of trail construction, tan in color, crushed to 1/4” minus and shall include crusher fines for the purpose of binding the material upon compaction. Trail mix shall match the color of the existing trail aggregate.

PART 3: EXECUTION

3.1 CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

A. Preparation of Trail: Grade and shape existing trail prior to placement of the aggregate surfacing. Grade and shape to the dimensions and grades/slopes as shown on the drawings. The trail bed on which the trail mix aggregate is to be placed shall be compacted and approved by the COR prior to the placing the trail aggregate.

B. Placing:

1. Typical Aggregate Depth: The material shall be placed on the prepared trail bed so after compactions of the aggregate, the new trail aggregate depth is 5 inches, plus or minus 1/2 inch. Place material so that the finished trail shall match the dimensions and grades as shown on the “Typical Section Views” on the drawings. The finished top width of the trail aggregate placement shall be 4 feet as shown on the drawings.

Materials placed outside of the 4-foot trail width shall be removed and replaced within the 4-foot trial width limits.

2. Varying Aggregate Depth(s): Adjust trail aggregate thickness at locations where the trail meets adjacent structures such as existing concrete parking, rip-rap curbing at 30” culvert locations, or in areas where interpretative signs exist. Blend aggregate into the existing grades as directed by the Contracting Officer to create a uniform grade that complies to ADA requirements.

C. Compacting: As per Section 02315, 3.2 A.

D. Post Trail Construction: After the trail aggregate has been placed and the trail is complete as approved by the Contracting Officer, all visible signs of construction, including but not limited to ruts, wheel tracks, berms, etc. shall be removed by whatever means necessary to remove all signs of the trail construction. Hand rake if necessary.

PART 4: MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

4.1 METHODS OF MEASUREMENT

A. Method: The quantity to be paid for will be the number of cubic yards compacted and accepted in the completed course. Weighing of material shall be at Contractor's expense.

4.2 BASIS OF PAYMENT

A. General: The accepted quantities, determined as provided above, will be paid for at the contract unit price per unit of measurement for the pay items listed below that are shown in the bid schedule. Price and payment will be full compensation for furnishing, placing, and compacting all materials, including all labor, equipment, tools, and incidentals necessary to complete the work prescribed in this section.
