1. BACKGROUND:

Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area (hereinafter referred to as “BISO”) is in both Kentucky and Tennessee and consists of approximately 125,000 acres. The park was established by Congress on March 7, 1974. The parks mission is to provide management for the National Area so that natural and cultural resources are preserved and protected for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries are preserved in a free-flowing condition, and a broad range of recreational opportunities are provided which benefit the regional economy.

This project will utilize contractual obligation to haul and tailgate spread 5422 tons of crushed limestone aggregate across 4.89 miles of established gravel roads within BISO. Several gravel roads within BISO have be fell into a poor condition due to heavy use and lack of needed surface conditioning. This project targets 2 sections of gravel road within the park and will return 4.89 miles of road surface to a good standard of condition. Park may have delivery stockpiled, park will provide location.

The targeted roads not only provide access to remote areas of the park for visitor/staff use, but they also provide the sole ingress/egress routes for access to cemeteries located within BISO boundaries. This project when completed will remove a significant amount of deferred maintenance from the BISO Roads and Trails Branch backlogs.
