1.0 Background
Fire Island National Seashore (FINS) seeks to retain the services of a contractor to perform clam shell dredging of sand at 2 distinct areas within the boundary of FINS, Watch Hill and Barrett Beach. Dredging of approximately 5000 cubic yards of sand from the southeast corner of the Watch Hill channel and the western edge of the entrance channel into the Watch Hill marina and place the sand upland adjacent to the project area. The channel has a designed width of 100’ wide and 6 feet deep at mean low water.
Current conditions from a winter of battering winds and tidal action have caused shoaling in the southwest portion of the channel. There are two work areas averaging 20’ wide, 700’ long, and 3’ deep of sand to be removed. Current depths in these areas are as minimal as 3’ at mean low tide. This depth of water is unnavigable and unsafe at certain tides and/or weather conditions and have been identified with buoys to direct vessel traffic away from these areas. Dredging also will be required along the north side of the Barrett Beach dock to remove approximately 500 cubic yards of material. The material will need to be barged east to Watch Hill (3.75 miles) and placed in the same dredge spoil area. Pre and Post dredge surveys will also be performed as part of this work to satisfy permitting needs and confirm the work that needs to be accomplished.
2.0 Statement of Work
