About this file
This document contains product specifications for a helicopter-mounted device to dispense aerial spheres for prescribed burns, along with details of a related federal contract opportunity. The device must be capable of injecting ethylene glycol into spheres to start a timed exothermic reaction before dispensing 25-175 spheres per minute from the aircraft. It requires a low-maintenance design with a variable dispense rate controlled by a 5-setting dial. Automatic functions include jam detection and clearing via a microprocessor-controlled motor and gates. A fixed displacement pump must deliver a consistent amount of chemical at any selected speed. Safety features consist of an on-board fire protection system with battery backup and a quick purge system. The launcher unit should weigh less than 50 pounds empty and accommodate at least 600 spheres in its hopper. It must utilize 1-inch spheres available in US fire caches and be controllable via remote handheld control. The solicitation from the Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management Montana-Dakotas seeks these devices and spheres under opportunity number 140L3623Q0045.
