Tunnel Jet Jon Boat Specifications

Background:

The Habitat and Partnerships Branch is interested in purchasing an 18 foot long aluminum tunnel jet Jon boat that can be outfitted for performing nighttime spotlight surveys for juvenile lake sturgeon in shallow rivers of Michigan and Wisconsin. A tunnel jet design was selected because it will allow the shallowest draft for navigating sand bars and riffles. Based on the expected weight of a typical 18’ Jon boat and the associated gear and crew, we will need an 80 horsepower motor. This boat should be capable of comfortably accommodating a 3-person crew including a driver and 2 spotters/netters. We will also need a single axle trailer for transporting the boat.

To perform spotlighting surveys, we will need to affix approximately 6 search lights around the front platform (2 bow, 2 starboard bow, 2 port bow). The most practical way to mount the lights is from a short rail that runs around the perimeter of the front platform. Several companies make bowfishing rails that would work well for this purpose.

We prefer to go with a company that is within 700 miles of our office in New Franken, WI. In the event that repairs need to be made after delivery, this distance is still within reasonable driving distance.
