Scope of Work Water Valve Actuator Replacement and Install New Valves Sullivan Creek National Fish Hatchery 21200 West Hatchery Road Brimley, MI 49715
Sullivan Creek National Fish Hatchery utilizes eight raceways with A and B sections in serial reuse to rear lake trout brood stock. There are currently eight (8) valves that supply fresh water to the B sections that are mainly utilized when cleaning the A sections. These valves supply the water needed to the lake trout as the A sections are being drawn down. Recently, several valve actuators have quit working, appear to be broken or stripped, and need to be replaced.
This work is to:
· Replace six (6) existing 8-inch manual valve actuators
· Install two (2) new 8-inch pressure slide gates
· Remove the workings to disable two (2) other existing 8-inch valve actuators
· Work also includes supplying and installing six (6)new cast iron valve box cover and assembly.
· All the valve actuators are keyed on a shaft that operates the butterfly valves. Installation will follow manufactures instructions and requirements. The work shall also include concrete and or bituminous surface work for patching the area surrounding the valve removal.
Existing Valves are Pratt GROUNDHOG 8-inch AWWA butterfly valves https://www.henrypratt.com/products/butterfly-valves/awwa-groundhog/4-72-groundhog/ All six existing valves are in-line, in 8-inch buried pipelines. The six (6) valves are currently under a road or access ways that are surfaced with approximately 4 inches of asphalt or concrete. It will require approximately 36 inches of excavation depth to access the six (6) actuator valves.
The contractor is responsible for saw cutting and removing the hard road surface, excavating to gain access to remove and replace the valve actuator with a new actuator. Contractor is responsible for replacing the existing valve box and covers with new cast iron assembly. Contractor is responsible to return valve box and cover assembly to original grade and concrete or asphalt openings to original thickness and grade with similar surfacing product.
Two of the eight valves are located in the buildings footing or foundation. These two valves will be abandoned in place and a new 8-inch Waterman Model P-30-F, Flat-back, “Red Top” Series Pressure Slide Gate with 2-inch square operating nut, non- rising stem, or equivalent, to be installed on each pipe discharge end. These two valves will be installed where the pipe discharges into head box of the B section raceway. Contractor shall be responsible for ensuring old, abandoned valves are in the open position and/or the butterfly portion of the valve shall be removed to ensure unobstructed water flow. Contractor is responsible to field verify proper fitment of new suggested valves.
Contractor is responsible for supplying new valves, hardware, adhesives, site preparation, dewatering and labor to install valves according to manufactures specifications.
Contractor is responsible for any possible dewatering during excavation. The water table in the work area is potentially high.
Contractor is responsible for supplying all new parts, equipment, and labor to complete the work. All installations will follow manufactures installation instructions.
All excavation will be limited to the smallest area possible to access and replace valve actuator. Hand excavation or mini excavator will be the most likely excavation options.
Contractor is responsible for removal and disposal of all demolished material.
Special Considerations for Working around Live Fish When performing work on the fresh-flow valves at Sullivan Creek NFH, the health of the brood fish are the upmost importance. Hatchery staff can shut down the work for the day if they feel the health of the fish is being affected.
Contractor will need to ask for permission to open garage and entrance doors. All doors will be closed immediately after being opened, and are not to be left open by contractor. There are mink living in the creek area that will enter through any open doors, and harm the brood fish.
Overhead lights can be turned up for contractor upon request (when necessary) and turned back down when not needed. Contractor is allowed to use additional lighting for work area, considering it does not adversely affect the brood fish and is not pointed directly at the fish in the raceways.
All equipment brought on station will require disinfection with a chlorine / bleach solution to prevent any spread of fish disease to our brood fish. Consult with hatchery staff for proper disinfection protocol.
