2 BACKGROUND

Melrose, an 1840s antebellum mansion with original outbuildings, is one unit of Natchez

National Historical Park. Interpretation of the exteriors of the historic structures on the site to the nineteenth century requires rehabilitation of the building exteriors in accordance with the treatment recommendations found in the Melrose Historic Structures Report (Ann Beha &

Associations, 1996) and clarified in the 2004 Programmatic Agreement Among the NPS, the

Historic Natchez Foundation, and the Mississippi State Historic Preservation Officer Regarding

Restoration of the Melrose Estate. Exterior paint colors generally follow the second painting period (mid-1850s), where possible, in keeping with the prime interpretive period of the house.

The Melrose estate holds national significance as a National Historic Landmark, and all buildings covered by this contract are historic structures original to the nineteenth century. All are contributing elements to the national significance of the estate. Work must be carried out in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic

Properties. A copy of these standards may be provided by the COR (Contracting Officer’s

Representative) for the project, if necessary.
