1.0 Background

Many sections of the Old Mastic House are elevated off the ground, which creates a gap between the foundation of the home and the surface of the ground. Many of these gaps have created simple entry points for nuisance wildlife to enter. This has been a chronic issue at the house for years. Fire Island staff has trapped and removed nuisance wildlife from these problem areas throughout the house for years. Staff has also been patching some of these problem sections.

Squirrels and Racoons were a common nuisance for a long time. Recently, woodchucks have taken over these problem areas creating multiple different burrows throughout the house.

Woodchucks are known for compromising the integrity of a foundation if left untreated. This problem has gone on long enough and staff has exhausted all temporary patch work done over the years. Now that the woodchucks are under the house it is critical that we remove and exclude them before irreversible damage is done. This needs to be done by a professional contractor to be done correctly.
