SCOPE OF WORK

SHILOH NATIONAL MILITARY PARK

CONSERVATION OF WHITFIELD TROUSERS

08 June 2021

A. PURPOSE

The purpose of this work is to conduct and document conservation treatment of an original 1862 Confederate Trousers in the collection of Shiloh National Military Park. The trousers were worn by Col.

Francis Eugene Whitfield. Col. Whitfield served with the 9th Mississippi Infantry “Corinth Rifles.”

During the fierce Battle of Shiloh, Whitfield held the rank of major and personally captured Union Col.

William Shaw of the 14th Iowa Infantry in the famous “Hornets Nest” on April 6, 1862. Later in the day, Whitfield was wounded in the hip and was expected to die. He recovered from his wound and continued to serve through the end of the war. Upon completion of work, the park plans to place the trousers on exhibit.

B. DESCRIPTIONS OF OBJECT TO BE TREATED

The object is an original 1862 Confederate Civil War Trousers made of cadet grey fulled wool. There is a blue wool covered cotton cord trim down the outside edge of each leg. The waistband is lined with an undyed twill weave cotton, the fly is lined with plain weave undyed cotton within a linen interlining. The pockets are striped blue and cream cotton twill. Only the top button remains on the button up fly. There are two cotton labels sticked to the proper right leg front.

The trousers are in very poor condition overall. The structural damage due to insect activity is extreme almost to the point the object is unrecognizable as trousers.
