SECTION 3.0 SCOPE OF WORK
3.1 Class A, B & C Mowing Overview: The locations subject to this contract encompass lawns and fields designated by the Park using 3 different standards for mowing. The first type is classified as Class A or “lawn” mowing. At Minute Man National Historical Park, Class A lawns include areas around visitor centers, public parking lots and residential structures. Class
A lawns at the Park require mowing between the months of April and October. The second mowing standard served under this contract is Class B or “maintained field” mowing. Class B maintained fields at Minute Man National Historical Park encompass several locations in the park where less frequent mowing is needed to maintain an open landscape but are within areas that are regularly visited by the public. Class B maintained fields at the Park require mowing between the months of April and October. Lastly, the third mowing standard served under this contract is Class C or “maintained meadow” mowing. Class C maintained meadows are mowed just once annually during the months of November through March as weather conditions permit.
3.2 Class A Mowing Standard: “Lawn” mowing shall be conducted to the following standards.
Locations identified in section 1.3.1 shall be mowed according to the below mentioned standards. An attached map identifies the locations, names and boundaries of the Class A mowing areas.
3.2.1 Class A lawns shall be maintained approximately every 2-4 weeks. This can vary depending on the time of the season and weather conditions. The selected contractor shall monitor local conditions to judge when lawns require mowing. For the purposes of estimating, it is assumed that locations listed as Class A Lawns will need to be mowed at least 10 times per calendar year.
3.2.2 Class A lawns shall be mowed to a height of 3 to 3 ½ inches. Grass in Class A locations shall never exceed 5 inches. Lawns shall not be mowed when wet conditions cause clumping of grass from mower discharge chutes. Clumping grass has the potential to kill sections of lawn and shall not be allowed. All grasses discharged onto paved or trail surfaces shall be blown off of these surfaces and back onto a lawn after mowing has been completed.
3.2.3 Class A mowing shall take place from April 1 to October 31.
3.2.4 Class A mowing is typically conducted around maintained structures and formal landscapes such as gardens. Due to varying weather conditions, some mowed areas may become flooded during periods of heavy rainfall. The COR will notify the contractor if such conditions exist and which areas to avoid.
3.2.7 If downed limbs or sticks are encountered in Class A areas, the contractor shall not mow or chip this woody debris. The contractor shall remove any limbs or sticks less than 4” in diameter from the mowed area. Any debris encountered may be removed off site or onto adjacent woodlots that are within NPS boundaries. If any limbs greater than 4” are encountered during mowing operations, the contractor shall notify the COR for the NPS to remove any of these larger limbs.
3.2.8 The contractor shall mow and string trim all vegetation located within the mapped
Class A areas. This includes, in particular, any poison ivy, briars or thorny vegetation in these areas. Prescence of any of these types of vegetation is not valid cause for avoidance of performing mowing of these areas.
3.2.9 The contractor shall avoid mowing or trimming any trash or recyclable materials encountered while conducting landscaping services. The contractor shall collect all trash or recycling materials collected within the mowing areas and properly dispose of them in NPS waste receptacles. If trash is inadvertently mowed, the contractor shall collect all debris for disposal.
