This contract will brush and ditch 7 miles of roads, opening the road corridor, and correcting drainage within KAWW to facilitate access to the park by preventing further erosion due to overgrown non-working drainages.

The Swift Brook Road and Wassataquiok Stream Road provide access to the Wassataquoik, and East Branch Penobscot Rivers as well as other outdoor recreation activities. These two roads provide year-round access for the public and park staff in the Southern Tract of KAWW.

Brush and ditch 7 miles of existing road corridor and ditches, including the brushing and removal of accumulated soil and rock to correct drainage.

Rehabilitate Approximately 7 miles of existing road corridor and ditches (see Attached Map)

1. Description of Road and Work Required:

The Swift Brook Road connects visitors to the Katahdin Loop Road, and the Wassataquoik Stream Road connects to International Appalachian Trail (IAT) and Wassataquoil River trail systems. The roads are generally grown in and have places where the vegetation will brush side of vehicle. The ditches are grown in and are not working correctly, brush needs to be cut down to ground level and excessive sediment removed to allow water to flow. The roads shall have the brush removed to the catch point of the road ditches. Ditches shall then be graded with native material to allow proper flow of water. Culverts entry and exit points to be cleaned and cleared to allow proper flow of water.

2. Vegetation – The project includes roads that have vegetation growing in the road and in most of the road ditches. Clear the vegetation to the catch line of the road ditches. Place all excess, unsuitable, small, trimmed material beyond the downslope edge of the road. Larger brush and bushes should be removed and brought to disposal pits that will be designated within 5 miles of any part of the road. Uniformly spread unsuitable material to a depth not exceeding 4 inches and do not obstruct drainage.

3. Clean ditches, and culverts, including inlets and outlets; and shape and around the traveled way and shoulders, including parking areas, pull-offs, turnouts, and approach road intersections. Culverts shall be cleaned without introducing water or silt into running watercourses. There are 15 culverts cross drains. Four crushed or damaged cross drain culverts will be replaced under this contract.

Cross drains are 18 " diameter and 20 ' in length. There will be no culvert replacement in regular watercourses. Contractor shall purchase the four culverts, metal or plastic is acceptable. Contractor shall provide 100 yards of gravel to use as needed for culvert replacement.

4. Grade the ditches to the typical sections along the road except in cut areas. Ensure that the area grades in cut sections - cutting a full ditch into the cut is not required unless it already exists. There.

Utilize as much soil as possible in the berms if soil is needed. The heavy vegetation shall be separated as indicated in item 2 (above). Clean culverts to drain. Remove excess materials from the roadbed, culverts, and ditches. Conserve and use suitable excess material from the drainage area on the road to repair the slope edge. Place all excess and unsuitable aggregate material beyond the downslope edge of the road. Uniformly spread unsuitable material to a depth not exceeding 4 inches and do not obstruct drainage. Ditches shall not drain into watercourses but will drain to a runout so that no ditch water will run into watercourses (provide run out drainage). Major ditching should be done with an excavator or similar piece of equipment.

5. Slide Maintenance - This work consists of the removal and disposal of slide material from the road and the restoration of all sections of road and ditch that have been damaged by rock/mud slide.

Conserve and use suitable material from the slide on the road to repair the slope edge of ditch.

Spread this material at a maximum depth of 3 inches for a distance not exceeding 100 feet in each direction from the site. Place all excess and unsuitable material beyond the downslope edge of the road. Uniformly spread unsuitable material to a depth not exceeding 4 inches and do not obstruct drainage.
