About this file
This sole source justification requests approval to award a contract to VirtaMed Inc. for additional surgical simulator modules. Womack Army Medical Center requires new learning modules for existing VirtaMed surgical simulators to train personnel in orthopedic, urology, OB/GYN and laparoscopic procedures. The acquisition includes knee, shoulder, and hip modules, an upgraded platform, and installation/training services. The total estimated cost is redacted.
The justification cites that VirtaMed is the original equipment manufacturer and only authorized provider of these proprietary products. The simulators combine unique, patented rubber models with virtual reality to offer realistic feedback superior to other options. A market survey and sources sought notice found no other capable suppliers. The contracting officer certified the justification as accurate and complete, and approved the sole source award.

The simulator is unique in the marketplace as it combines the rubber model of each relevant discipline with the benefits of virtual reality. The rubber model provides immediate and realistic feedback as opposed to any sort of robotic devices. The simulator also incorporates adapted original instruments, another feature that is not available on any other simulator. These features as well as the engine that generates the photo realistic graphics needed to ensure the realism of the system are all under lP protection and proprietary to VirtaMed AG. If training tools are not purchased to use on the existing equipment, the mission to train surgical staff members prior to real-life surgery would not be met.
