About this file

This is a Commercial Item Description (CID) document A-A-50013H, effective September 9, 2024, that supersedes A-A-50013G (September 15, 2009), establishing specifications for quarter-sleeve cotton undershirts for military personnel of the Department of Defense.

The specification covers two types of undershirts: Type I (Crew Neck) and Type II ("V" Neck), both constructed from 100 percent combed cotton circular jersey knit. Available colors include White (Class 1), CG Blue 3362 (Class 3), Black 357 (Class 4), Olive Green 109 (Class 7), Air Force Sand 1643 (Class 8), Tan 499 (Class 9), Coyote Brown 3760 (Class 11), and Olive Drab OD 522 (Class 12), with Classes 2, 5, 6, and 10 deleted in this revision. Eight sizes are specified ranging from XX-Small to XXX-Large with defined finished measurements for chest width, length, and neck opening circumference. Key material requirements include a weight of 4.0 ounces per square yard, minimum 30 wales and 36 courses per inch for basic material, minimum bursting strength of 60 psi, and colorfastness standards (minimum 3-4 rating for laundering, perspiration, and lightfastness; minimum 3.5 for crocking). All undershirts must feature double-thick 1x1 rib knit collarettes, seamless sides, hemmed bottoms and quarter-length sleeves, with specific seam and stitch requirements detailed for reinforcement and durability. Thread shall be 100 percent cotton or approved polyester alternatives matching the garment color. Each undershirt requires a combination size and care instruction label placed inside center back below the collarette, along with individual bar-coded hang tags containing NSN and UPC information. The Government furnishes complete patterns or master pattern grading rules; contractors may use commercial patterns provided they conform to specified design and finished dimensions. Acceptance criteria include visual examination per ASQ/ANSI Z1.4 for material defects, stitching defects, workmanship, labels, and packaging, with dimensional tolerances of ±1/2 inch for width and ±1 inch for length, neck opening, and body length. Optional antimicrobial treatment may be specified and must demonstrate 99 percent effectiveness against Staphylococcus Aureus, Klebsiella Pneumoniae, and Escherichia Coli after 25 launderings. The document references multiple military and commercial standards including MIL-DTL-32075, AATCC test methods, ASTM standards, and AMS-STD-595 for color specifications, with specific guidance on visual shade matching using CIE Illuminants D65, D75, or A.
