About this file
This document outlines technical specifications for scanning Doppler lidars sought under a solicitation from the Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The lidars must be able to mount on a mobile research facility consisting of a trailer pulled by a truck, with the ability to scan the entire hemisphere at 0.01 resolution in both axes through user-defined programs. Technical requirements include precise time synchronization between multiple lidars, bandwidth of at least 18 m/s radial velocity, eye-safe Class 1M lasers in the 1.5 μm spectral region, range resolution of better than 30 m, reliable detection to 70 m range, maximum range of 12 km, temporal resolution selectable from 0.1 to 30 seconds, velocity accuracy less than 50 cm/s, operating temperature range of -20C to +40C, power needs of 24V DC and 1200W, pulse rate of 10 kHz, solid-state 1TB hard drive, UDP data broadcasting, integrated GPS, and a one-year warranty. Delivery is required by December 15, 2023.

Attachment 1 Scanning Doppler Lidars
The scanning Doppler Lidars will be part of mobile research facilities consisting of a small trailer containing numerous scientific instruments that will be pulled by a pick-up truck. The lidars will be mounted on a lift system that will allow for the lidar to be raised through the roof of the trailer and scan the atmosphere from above the top of the trailer. When the trailer is in motion, the lidar will be lowered to reduce vehicle instability. Size and weight will be an important consideration in the selection of the lidars given the small trailer size, restricted access due to all of the other equipment residing within the trailer, and mounting on the lift system. The rapid nature of the deployments near forest fires requires quick and simple user-configurable scans.
