About this file
This is a Technical Manual for the Mechanical Dereefer, Model DM-500, manufactured by FXC Corporation. The document provides comprehensive operational, maintenance, and installation instructions for this specialized parachute component.
The Mechanical Dereefer is a precision device designed to release a reefing line rigged around cargo parachute canopies during the opening sequence, replacing traditional reefing line cutters on large cargo parachutes. Set for a two-second opening delay with ±20% timing tolerance, the device weighs 10.9 ounces and measures 1.75" x 4.25" x 1.00" with operating temperatures ranging from -40°F to +160°F. The unit has a service life of 100 operations with 100-pound loads and provides sea water resistance to five meters depth for one hour. The Dereefer utilizes two latches controlled by a timer mechanism to hold looped reefing line ends and mounts directly into existing M-21 mounting brackets using FXC P/N 511-00547 mounting screws. Installation requires a cocking tool (P/N 811-00350) to set the timing mechanism by rotating the timer shaft clockwise—a quarter turn produces the two-second delay. The manual includes detailed procedures for pre-drop actuation testing (with acceptable release times between 1.60–2.40 seconds), airdrop installation on G-11 series parachutes, post-drop maintenance for ground and sea recoveries, and troubleshooting guidance. Accessories sold separately include the screwdriver (P/N 311-81453), cocking tool, and mounting bracket (P/N 311-81403).

SECTION I
1.1 GENERAL
1.2 This section contains description, operation and specification data for the Mechanical Dereefer, Model DM-500, part number 811-00289-4.
1.3 DESCRIPTION
1.4 The Mechanical Dereefer (Model DM-500) is designed to release a reefing line that is rigged around a cargo parachute canopy. This reefing line is used to control (slow down/retard) the opening sequence of the canopy. The Dereefer mechanism is set for a two (2) second delay. A static line to the Dereefer lanyard initiates the selected count-down, triggering the release of the reefing line after the appropriate delay. The tolerance on the time delay setting is +/- 20%.
1.5 The Mechanical Dereefer (Model DM-500) is a precision device that is manufactured from corrosion resistant materials for a long service life. The timer mechanism is water resistant to a depth of 5 meters for one hour. The timer mechanism is set for a two (2) second delay by winding the timer shaft and inserting the lanyard. The timing sequence is initiated at parachute opening by withdrawing the lanyard from the timer shaft.
1.6 The looped ends of the reefing line are held by two (2) latches that are held in the locked position by a locking bar. The locking bar is in turn controlled by the timer mechanism. The Dereefer is designed to fit into the existing M-21 mounting bracket without modification. The Dereefer can be re-used after the reefing lines are re-attached and the timer rewound.

1.8 OPERATION
1.9 The Mechanical Dereefer is designed to unlatch the looped ends of a reefing line. The timer mechanism within the Dereefer can release the reefing line at a pre-selected two (2) second delay.
1.10 The Dereefer is designed to fit into the existing M-21 mounting bracket with no modifications to the bracket what so ever. The addition of a simple reefing line with appropriately sewn 1-inch loops is required. Reference Army TM 10-1670-280-23&P, Appendix E.
The following steps outline the requirements for proper functioning:
1. Install the Mechanical Dereefer in the standard M-21 mounting bracket by first removing the mounting screw located on one end of the Dereefer. Once this screw is removed, the large locating boss on the opposite end of the Dereefer can be inserted into the bracket. With the large boss now fitted into the bracket, the mounting screw end of the Dereefer can now be snapped into the bracket. The Dereefer body, now positioned within the bracket, needs to be permanently bolted to the bracket by reinstalling the mounting screw through the bracket and back into the Dereefer body. Tighten the screw.
2. A simple reefing line must now be manufactured locally to the correct dimension, that specifically include “loop ends” with the dimensions of each loop of at least one (1) inch. See Figure 1.
3. Position the ends of this new reefing line around the canopy and over each of the latching arms of the Dereefer. Close the latching arms of the Dereefer into the body (trapping the loop ends). Now take the cocking tool (FXC P/N 811-00350) and position it so that the two pointed ramps on the jaws of the tool fit under the locking bar. See Figure 2.
4. With the looped ends of the reefing line trapped by the latches, and the cocking tool positioned appropriately, squeeze the handles of the tool tightly. The tool will lock in place if properly adjusted. This action raises the locking bar into the up-and-locked position which retains the two latches. Make sure no visible gap on both sides of the Dereefer housing after clamping the cocking tool. See Figure 2 and 3.
5. Set the release time delay by rotating the timer shaft CLOCKWISE using a standard 3/16” tip screwdriver (or FXC equivalent P/N 311-81453). A quarter turn (1/4) results in a two (2) second delay, see Figure 4.
NOTE:
A. Turn the timer shaft slowly CLOCKWISE, the timer mechanism will make an audible sound as the mechanism is set. DO NOT wind the Timer with more than 10 inch-pounds of torque. DO NOT attempt to wind the Timer after it has come to a stop.
B. If the timer shaft will not turn, re-check the engagement of the cocking tool. The timer cannot be set unless the locking bar is fully raised to the locked positions (visible gaps between jaws of the cocking tool and the Dereefer housing). See Figure 2.
C. Loosen the locknuts and adjust the knurled screw to eliminate the visible gaps if required. Tighten the locknuts after making an adjustment. See Figure 2.
1-2

6. The timer shaft is spring loaded so it must be held in the two (2) second position with constant twisting force from the screwdriver. This force must be maintained for the final step of inserting the lanyard into place to be successfully completed. DO NOT turn the timer shaft COUNTERCLOCKWISE, this will result in damage to the timing mechanism. DO NOT attempt to wind the Timer after it has come to a stop, this may damage the Timer mechanism.
7. Inserting the arming lanyard into the timer shaft through the proper holes in the cover will complete the arming operation. See Figure 4
NOTE: A slight clockwise or counter clockwise turning of the timer shaft may be required to line up the timer shaft hole with the holes in the cover. The holes must be in alignment to be able to insert the lanyard.
After the lanyard is inserted, the twisting pressure on the screwdriver can be released and the cocking tool can be opened and removed from the Dereefer.

PRE-DROP ACTUATION TEST
2.1 GENERAL
2.2 PRE-DROP ACTUATION TEST PROCEDURE:
Remove the mounting screw from the Dereefer while performing the functional test. The Dereefer cannot be cocked with the mounting screw installed without the mounting bracket.
a. The Dereefer must be used with a loop when tested for actuation. The loop is attached to a suitable lifting device and the opposite end has the loop that attaches to the Dereefer, see Figure 5.
b. Attach the test weight of approximately 100 pounds to a second loop that allows sufficient height to actuate the Dereefer. (Approximately one (1) inch is sufficient to test the release action of the Dereefer).
c. Place the loop from the load over the left latch and the loop from the support structure over the right latch and move the latches to the ‘closed’ position. Place the two pointed ramps of the cocking tool, P/N 811-00350, under the locking bar and close the tool.
d. Set the release time delay by rotating the timer shaft CLOCKWISE with a standard 3/16” tip screwdriver (or FXC equivalent P/N 311-81453). A quarter turn (yellow mark at the 12 o’clock position) will be a two second delay. DO NOT turn the timer shaft COUNTERCLOCKWISE, this will damage the timer mechanism. DO NOT attempt to wind the Timer after it has come to a stop, this may damage the Timer.
e. Insert the arming lanyard into the timer shaft through the two holes in the cover while holding the timer shaft at the desired setting.
f. Raise the test load to approximately one inch above the support and time the interval between the removing of the lanyard and the release of the test load.
Hold the Dereefer by hand or other suitable source to prevent the Dereefer from falling to the ground after the time delay sequence.
Ensure that all personnel are clear of the load when the release actuates to prevent injury upon separation.
NOTE
Dereefers with Teflon washers used to center the Latches may remain in the open position after operation. Slight hand force should be applied to close the Latches.
g. The Dereefer can be re-installed into the mounting bracket and used again if the load release test is within the timing limits. If the Dereefer does not function properly, it must be returned to the factory.
