About this file

This Statement of Work outlines NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's requirement for specialized optical filters for their Observational Cosmology Lab's cryogenic detector testbeds. The filters are needed for validating detector designs and verifying performance of ultrasensitive, low-temperature superconducting detectors used in astrophysics and cosmology research at far-infrared, sub-millimeter, and microwave wavelengths.

The technical requirements specify 9 total filters: 3 lowpass and 3 highpass filters with edges near 3 and 6 THz, 1 lowpass filter with edge near 1.1 THz, 1 highpass filter with edge near 0.8 THz, and 1 lowpass blocking filter with 10 THz cutoff. All filters must be 50mm in diameter with custom mounting holes, demonstrate operation at cryogenic temperatures below 1K, achieve >90% transmission in passband, and reject >99% of integrated out-of-band power. The filters will be installed at GSFC's cryogenic detector testbed facility, with delivery required no later than January 1, 2025.

STATEMENT OF WORK

1. Objective/Requirements

The Observational Cosmology Lab at GSFC develops technologies and instruments for astrophysics and cosmology at far-infrared, sub-millimeter, and microwave wavelengths, including ultrasensitive, low-temperature, superconducting detectors. Cryogenic test facilities with the ability to illuminate detectors with known amounts of radiation across a controlled optical bandwidth are required for validation of detector designs and verification that detector performance meets mission requirements. The filters being procured are critical for defining the optical passband of cryogenic testbeds.

2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs

The vendor will provide 3 lowpass and 3 highpass filters with edges near 3 and 6 THz, 1 lowpass filter with an edge near 1.1 THz, 1 highpass filter with an edge near 0.8 THz, and a single lowpass blocking filter with a cutoff frequency at 10 THz. These filters will be 50 mm in diameter with a custom hole pattern for mounting. The filters must be demonstrated at cryogenic temperatures to < 1 K. The filters shall have transmission greater than 90% in the passband and reject > 99% of integrated out-of-band power.

3. Place of Performance

The filters will be housed in a cryogenic detector testbed at Goddard Space Flight Center.

4. Period of Performance

The work is complete when all filters are delivered and no later than 1/1/2025.
