About this file
This is a Statement of Work for BP-1 Lunar Regolith Simulant Material Testing supporting NASA's development of LS-DYNA simulations for the Human Landing System touchdown on the Moon. The contractor shall conduct materials testing to provide mechanical property data (strength, stiffness, and compressibility) for lunar regolith using BP-1 simulant material provided by NASA in bulk form. The testing will generate parameters necessary to develop six MAT016 material models representing different initial densities of lunar regolith.
The contractor must perform the following tests: (1) minimum and maximum void ratio testing in accordance with ASTM D4254 and ASTM D4253; (2) direct shear tests with a minimum of three normal forces at six representative densities (1.500, 1.560, 1.600, 1.700, 1.735, and 1.800 kg/m³), with densities to be agreed upon by NASA and the vendor; and (3) a minimum of one hydrostatic compression test at 1.800 kg/m³ density conducted from zero to maximum pressure with at least five intermediate unloading cycles to determine bulk unloading modulus, including three cycles between 0.0 and 1.0 MPa. The contractor must develop and obtain NASA approval for a sample preparation procedure ensuring uniform properties, oven-dry the BP-1 simulant before each test, and deliver post-processed results in tabular and graphical format using Microsoft Excel. The material must be sourced from contract number 6NSSC8P68G to eliminate batch variability. The contractor shall ensure safe work practices when handling crystallized silica dust per the Material Safety Data Sheet and CDC guidance. The period of performance is 60 calendar days from contract initiation.

Statement of Work
BP-1 Lunar Regolith Simulant Material Testing
1. Introduction / Background / Need NASA is developing LS-DYNA simulations of the Human Landing System (HLS) touchdown on the surface of the Moon. The objectives of the simulations include predicting the HLS lander dynamics, with an emphasis on determining the depth to which the lander footpads penetrate the lunar soil (i.e., regolith). The predictive capability of the LS-DYNA simulations relies on accurately representing the lunar regolith mechanical properties such as strength, stiffness, and compressibility. The regolith material characteristics have been determined to be a driving parameter influencing the lander dynamics; however, very little regolith material data is available to anchor the parameters used in the LS-DYNA material models.
The tests described in this Statement of Work are intended to provide material data for the lunar regolith LS-DYNA material models. NASA's HLS landings simulations use the LS-DYNA MAT016 Pseudo-Tensor and EOS8 Tabulated Compaction material models. The MAT016 model defines the material properties and requires input parameters based off of shear strength, cohesion and friction angles. The purpose of the tests described herein is to produce the parameters necessary to develop six MAT016 models representing different initial densities of lunar regolith. In addition to the material parameters, information on the theoretical minimum and maximum void ratios in the material is sought. Since actual regolith from the lunar surface is not available, the tests will be conducted using a regolith simulant called BP-1.
2. Scope of Work
The Contractor shall conduct the following tests and data processing to support NASA's development of the regolith LS-DYNA material models. The BP-1 regolith simulant required for the tests has been provided by NASA in bulk form.
7) Materials.Testing.
a. Conduct minimum void ratio and maximum void ratio test of BP-1 regolith simulant in accordance with the procedures set forth in ASTM D4254 (maximum) and ASTM D4253 (minimum).
b. Conduct direct shear tests with a minimum of 3 normal forces with BP-1 simulant representing six representative densities specified in Table 1. NASA and the vendor shall agree on the densities to be used for the testing.
Table 1. Targeted density for material property measurements
Sample Density (kg/m3)
1.500 1.560 1.600 1.700 1.735 1.800
c. Conduct a minimum of one hydrostatic compression test with BP-1 simulant representing a density of 1.800 kg/m3. The hydrostatic compression tests shall be conducted from a minimum pressure of zero to a maximum pressure at which the BP-1 simulant reaches its minimum void ratio (i.e., maximum volumetric strain). Each hydrostatic compression test shall include at least five intermediate unloading cycles that enable the bulk unloading modulus to be determined at the selected strain increments. Three of the unloading cycles shall be conducted at pressures between 0.0 MPa and 1.0 MPa
The Contractor shall adhere to the following guidelines for the tests.
o The Contractor shall develop a sample preparation procedure to ensure uniform properties (i.e., void ratio, dry bulk density) throughout the samples which shall be approved by NASA before proceeding o The regolith simulant shall be oven dried before preparing each test sample.
The drying process shall be conducted to the point at which the sample mass stabilizes.
o The Contractor shall post-process the test data and produce results in tabular and graphical form. The data for each test shall be delivered in Microsoft Excel format.

4. Period of Performance
The period of performance is 60 calendar days from contract initiation https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/silica/work/index.html
