About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for NASA's Artemis Suit Materials (ASM) Project focusing on developing water-soluble polyimide coating formulations for lunar extravehicular activity suit materials. The project encompasses formulation development, white pigment evaluation, fiber coating demonstrations, mechanical testing, and production fiber coating over an 18–20 week performance period following Authority to Proceed (ATP). The contractor shall investigate four candidate pathways for water-soluble CP-1 polyimide coatings and prepare approximately 1 liter of each formulation; concurrently evaluate white pigment formulations compatible with the coating chemistry; conduct coating trials on NASA-selected high-performance fibers (Kevlar, Vectran, or PBO); and perform Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) imaging and tensile testing (break strength and elongation measurements) on coated samples.
Key deliverables include four water-soluble CP-1 formulations, three coated fiber sample sets, two coated fabric swatches, approximately one-half spool of production-coated fiber in one NASA-selected fiber type, SEM images, mechanical test results, monthly status email updates, a kickoff meeting, and a final technical report of approximately 10 pages documenting formulation development, coating trials, testing results, observations, and recommendations. The scope explicitly excludes travel unless authorized by NASA and material purchases beyond those necessary to complete formulation evaluation. Pricing under Task 6 (Production Fiber Coating) is based on one fiber type, with provisions for adding additional fiber types through SOW modification. The contractor must promptly communicate any technical or schedule risks affecting project completion.

Statement of Work (SOW)
Project Title Development and Evaluation of Water-Soluble Polyimide Coating Formulations for Artemis
Suit Materials
Background
NASA's Artemis Suit Materials (ASM) Project is developing advanced textile systems for future lunar Extravehicular Activity (EVA) suits. This effort will investigate water-soluble versions of CP-1 polyimide coatings, evaluate white pigment technologies for future optical applications, and demonstrate the feasibility of coating high-performance fibers for textile applications. The resulting coated fibers will support material down-selection and future fabric development activities.
Objective
• Develop candidate water-soluble CP-1 coating formulations.
• Evaluate white pigment formulation approaches compatible with the coating chemistry.
• Demonstrate coating of candidate high-performance fibers.
• Characterize coated fibers through microscopy and mechanical testing.
• Deliver coated fiber samples, coated fabric swatches, coated production fiber, and a final technical report for NASA evaluation.
Period of Performance
Approximately 18–20 weeks following Authority to Proceed (ATP).
Travel
No travel is anticipated unless specifically authorized by NASA.
Detailed Scope
Task 1 – Project Management and Reporting
• Conduct a kickoff meeting to review project objectives, schedule, communication expectations, and NASA-selected candidate materials.
• Provide monthly status updates via email.
• Participate in virtual technical meetings as needed.
• Prepare a final technical report (approximately 10 pages) documenting formulation development, coating trials, testing results, observations, recommendations, and suggested future work.
Task 2 – Water-Soluble CP-1 Formulation Development
• Investigate four candidate pathways for producing a water-soluble version of CP-1.
• Prepare approximately 1 liter of each formulation for NASA evaluation.
• Document formulation approaches, processing observations, and technical considerations encountered during development.
Task 3 – White Pigment Formulation Evaluation
• Utilize analytical methods to evaluate white pigment formulations suitable for future dispersion into CP-1 coating systems.
• Perform formulation development activities concurrent with CP-1 development.
• Assess formulation compatibility and dispersion characteristics.
• Document observations and recommend promising formulation approaches.
• Material purchases beyond those necessary to complete the formulation evaluation are not included within this task.
Task 4 – Coating Demonstration
• Receive non-pigmented CP-1 formulations developed under Task 2.
• Conduct coating trials using NASA-selected candidate fibers and fabrics.
• Deliver three representative coated fiber sample sets.
• Deliver two representative coated fabric swatches.
• Document coating processes, observations, coating quality, and any processing limitations encountered.
Task 5 – Testing and Evaluation
• Perform Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) imaging.
• Perform tensile testing to determine break strength.
• Measure elongation at break.
• Summarize testing results within the final report.
Task 6 – Production Fiber Coating
• Procure, or utilize NASA-provided, a single bobbin of one NASA-selected fiber type
(Kevlar, Vectran, or PBO).
• Extrusion coat the selected fiber using the down-selected colorless polyimide formulation.
• Deliver approximately one-half spool of coated fiber to NASA for subsequent textile evaluation.
• Pricing under this task is based on one fiber type. Additional fiber types may be added by modification to this Statement of Work.
