About this file

This Statement of Work describes a purchase request for an Agilent 8890 GC/7000E GC Triple Quad mass spectrometer system to be delivered to NASA Ames Research Center, Building N239, room 310, Moffett Field, California, by July 31, 2026. The system is required for molecular and stable isotope analysis of meteoritic organic compounds to determine their cosmochemical origins.

The specified instrument must include a dual filament design to ensure continued operation if the primary filament fails, protecting precious samples and experimental time. The system requires a monolithic gold-plated quadrupole to enhance sensitivity for high boiling point compounds found in meteoritic samples, and it must feature universal acquisition and processing software compatible across different mass spectrometry platforms to enable users to work with both liquid and gas phase instrumentation using the same software. Critical performance specifications include a 4 femtogram Octafluoronaphthalene Instrument Detection Limit to ensure sensitivity for ultra-trace level analyte detection, and the system must have the capability to read legacy Agilent Chem Station data files into newer software platforms, which only Agilent can accomplish through its Mass Hunter software. This is identified as the only instrument capable of performing the required analyses while maintaining compatibility with the large volume of historical data.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Purchase Request of Agilent 8890 GC/7000E GC Triple Quad System

1. Objective/Requirements

The purchase of a GC Triple Quad mass spectrometer is essential for analysis molecular and stable isotope analysis of meteoritic organic compounds to determine their Cosmo chemical origins. These instruments are an investment and in order to generate high quality data that is a requirement to fulfill the mission of the lab, it is necessary that we not only take into consideration cost, but quality of the instrument and the ability to process the data. I have many years of experience in running, maintaining and fixing mass spectrometers and am familiar with many vendors including Shimadzu, Agilent, Thermo. The instrument I have requested for purchase is an Agilent 8890 GC/7000E GC Triple Quad System. This is the only instrument I have found to be able to perform the required analyses and also read a large volume of past data.

2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs

• Dual Filament design to ensure the system can be run even when the primary filament fails to ensure no loss of precious samples or experimental time

• Monolithic gold plated quadrupole to assist in boosting sensitivity of high boiling point compounds found in Meteoric samples.

• The system must have acquisition and processing software that is universal across mass spectrometry platforms to allow users to be able to use both liquid and gas phase instrumentation with the same software.

• 4 fg Octafluoronaphthalene Instrument Detection Limit (IDL) specification to ensure sensitivity to detect ultra trace level of analytes

• Ability to read old data files from Agilent Chem Station into newer software platforms. Only Agilent can perform this with its Mass Hunter software.

3. Place of Performance

NASA Ames Research Center, Building N239, room 310, Moffett Field, CA

4. Period of Performance Requesting delivery of equipmement by July 31, 2026.
