About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) defining the material characterization tasks for a NASA and LeapFast collaborative project involving advanced aluminum manufacturing and testing.
NASA will deliver 30 CP-1 aluminum plates measuring 12"x0.25"x5" to LeapFast, who will use their proprietary Bobbin Friction Stir Deposition (B-FSD) process to deposit AA6061 material on the plates. LeapFast will use 25 plates to refine their B-FSD process for AA6061 compatibility and will process a final 5 plates, extending them by at least 2 inches in length and removing excess start/stop material to achieve final dimensions of 8"x0.25"x7". LeapFast will deliver the 5 processed plates to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). NASA MSFC will then cut material test specimens from these plates and conduct material testing down to 20 Kelvin (-423°F), with test results shared between both parties. The period of performance begins upon LeapFast's receipt of the CP-1 plates (expected October 2026) and extends for five months through February 2027. Key requirements specify that delivered plates must meet the initial 12"x0.25"x5" dimensions and final processed plates must be no less than 8"x0.25"x7" in dimension.

NASA/LeapFast CP-1 Material Characterization SOW
1. Purpose/Introduction This Statement of Work defines the tasks and deliverables required to support the material characterization of AA6061 deposited on top of Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) printed CP-1 aluminum using LeapFast’s novel Bobbin Friction Stir Deposition (B-FSD) process.
2. Scope of Work NASA will have 30 CP-1 plates 12”x0.25”x5” (LxWxH) printed and delivered to LeapFast, who will use their B-FSD process to deposit AA6061 on the CP-1 plates, extending their height by 2”. 2” of excess start/stop material will be removed from each side of the length for final plate dimension of 8”x0.25”x7” (LxWxH). LeapFast will deliver 5 plates to NASA MSFC who will cut material test specimens from these plates and perform material tests down to 20K (-423F). The test results will be shared between LeapFast and NASA. The period of performance begins when LeapFast receives the CP-1 plates (expected Oct 2026) and has a 5-month duration (expected to end in Feb 2027).
3. Requirements
a. Dimension of plates delivered to LeapFast shall be 12”x0.25”x5” (LxWxH)
b. Final dimensions of the plates after B-FSD process shall be no less than
8”x0.25”x7” (LxWxH).
4. Tasks/Work Breakdown
a. NASA shall deliver 30 CP-1 plates with the dimension of 12”x0.25”x5”
(LxWxH) to LeapFast
b. LeapFast shall use 25 of these plates to refine their B-FSD process for use with AA6061
c. LeapFast shall deposit AA6061 on the final 5 CP-1 plates, extending their length by no less than 2 inches and removing excess material to final dimensions of 8”x0.25”x7” (LxWxH)
d. LeapFast shall deliver 5 extended plates to NASA MSFC
e. NASA shall cut material test specimens from the plates
f. NASA shall perform material testing on test specimens
g. NASA shall deliver test data to LeapFast
