About this file

This is a NASA Statement of Work (SOW) for the Advanced Exploration Systems Life Support Systems program, dated 15 April 2026, issued by the Closed-Loop ECLSS Air Revitalization (CLEAR) Project Team at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center.

The SOW requires a Commercial Partner to synthesize and deliver two 1-kilogram (±0.5 kg) batches of pelletized Metal Organic Framework (MOF) material designated Cu[Ni(pdt)2] (NKMOF-1-Ni) for hydrogen separation technology applications. The first batch shall use Binder 1 and the second batch shall use Binder 2 (if applicable), with both batches shaped into spherical or semi-spherical particles sized at 8-12 mesh. The Commercial Partner has discretion to select one or two organo-ligand binder candidates, provided they meet four critical requirements: withstand activation temperatures of at least 150°C, resist degradation in the presence of moisture (<1% H2O vapor by volume), introduce no additional off-gas or dusting hazards, and remain compatible with a gas composition containing hydrogen, acetylene, ethylene, carbon monoxide, and methane. Binder selection must be accompanied by written justification demonstrating compliance with these requirements. The spherical shaping is specified as optimal for packing efficiency, and the 1-kg batch size is designated to reduce production costs based on the Commercial Partner's available batch capabilities. Deliverables shall be shipped to Marshall Space Flight Center for evaluation on a benchtop scale to assess hydrogen separation capability.

INTRODUCTION

The Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) has worked with Cooperative Agreement Notice (CAN) partners to identify alternative MOF candidates to act as a hydrogen separation technology to separate/capture hydrocarbons (acetylene, carbon monoxide, methane, and ethylene) from Methane Post-Processor Assembly (MPPA) off-gas.

Recovery of hydrogen will allow for increased overall efficiency and recyclability of Sabatier CO2 chemical reduction processes required for Mars Transit, Surface Habitat, and future long-duration flight missions away from Earth.

The Closed-Loop ECLSS Air Revitalization (CLEAR) Team is interested in a bulk synthesis of Cu[Ni(pdt)2] (NKMOF-1-Ni). NASA will defer to the expertise of The Commercial Partner to select one or two organo-ligand binder candidates. The organo-ligand binder candidates must be able to:

1. Withstand activation temperatures of at least 150°C.

2. Must not degrade in the presence of moisture (<1% H2O vapor by volume)

3. Must not introduce additional off-gas or dusting hazards (must not degrade).

4. Be compatible with a gas composition containing hydrogen, acetylene, ethylene, carbon monoxide, and methane.

The MOF(s) will be evaluated for their capability to separate hydrogen on a benchtop scale.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The goal of this statement of work is to procure two 1-kg (±0.5 kg per pelletizing process) batches of pelletized MOF to test in the sub-scale test bed. The objectives of this statement of work are as follows.

1. Commercial Partner shall produce two 1-kg (±0.5 kg) batches of MOF including: 1-kg (±0.5 kg) of Cu[Ni(pdt)2] bound into spherical particles of sizes (8-12 mesh) using Binder 1 and 1-kg (±0.5

kg) of Cu[Ni(pdt)2] bound into spherical particles of sizes (8-12 mesh) using Binder 2 (if applicable)

a. Spherical shaping is selected as an optimal shape for packing.

b. Utilizing 1-kg (±0.5 kg) to reduce cost of production based on potential batch sizes available to the commercial partner.

c. Binder selection must be accompanied with justification and assurance that organo-ligand binder candidates meet the requirements in the Introduction.

2. Deliver to Marshall Space Flight Center.

Performance Requirements and Deliverables:

The Product Requirements are noted as follows:

1. Pelletized MOF shall be spherical or semi-spherical in structure.

2. MOF size shall be 8-12 mesh.

The Deliverables are as follows:

1. 1-kg (±0.5 kg) of pelletized Cu[Ni(pdt)2] bound with Binder 1

2. 1-kg (±0.5 kg) of pelletized Cu[Ni(pdt)2] bound with Binder 2
