About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document addressing technical clarifications for a NASA coated optical component procurement. The document confirms that the item is not subject to ITAR control, EAR export restrictions, or intra-cavity optic classification, but will be used with a 488 nm laser system. The component is a Plano/Plano optical part with 0.1 mm wedge or parallelism tolerance (0.014 degrees of wedge) over the full diameter.
NASA clarifies that it will not be applying or curing coatings on the mirrors and specifies that only Surface 1 shall be coated. The coating type is described as "Protected" to indicate a non-oxidizing coating suitable for the specified wavelength band and coated clear aperture, though the specific coating material (Protected Aluminum, Protected Silver, etc.) is not explicitly defined as long as Rave (reflectivity) requirements are met across the specified wavelength band and clear aperture. The only testing and qualification requirement specified in the Statement of Work is reflectivity measurements; no additional environmental, abrasion, or laser durability testing is required.

Text version
o Is this a defense article subject to ITAR control? NO
If yes, what is the US Munitions Code?
Is this data/design of US origin (22 CFR Sect. 124.13)?
o Is this item under Export Control regulated by the EAR? (e.g. Dual-use products, aerospace & propulsion applications) NO
If yes, what is the ECCN?
o Will the part be used with a laser or in a laser system? YES 488 nm
If yes, is this an intra-cavity optic? NO o Will this be exported and, if so, where? NO the coating type. I wonder if it is "Protected Aluminum" or "Protected Silver", etc.?
band and coated clear aperture. By stating “Protected”, we are implying a coating that is not going to oxidize over time.
—this is a Plano / Plano part, correct? YES
What is the wedge or parallelism? 0.1 mm over the full diameter (0.014 degrees of wedge)
1. Coating application & cure method
Our coatings are thermally cured, so we would need to understand how the end user plans to apply and cure the coating on the substrate (e.g., available oven capability, temperature limits, cure
We are not applying and/or curing any coatings, period.
2. Coated surfaces
Will the coating be applied to one side or both sides of the optic? This is clearly stated in the SOW…only surface 1 shall be coated.
3. Application method
None of these as we (NASA) are not coating the mirrors.
4.
We don’t require anything else.
